These two private schools are AA heavyweights with long pedigrees of success and tent pole players in Kentucky bound Maddyn Greenway of Providence and Maryland recruit Addie Mack of Minnehaha. This was round one of a potential three rounds.

And it was a game with literary echoes with Dickens, followed by words of wisdom from Mike Tyson. It was a tale of two halves, or maybe even a tale of one half of a half where the Redhawks enjoyed the best of times. The hosts opened with an 11-2 start after the first 3:30 of the game. They kept rolling with that hot start with a string of six straight scores on a 15-9 surge to get to their biggest lead at 26-13. They were hot from the start. That was the punch in the mouth that Providence received. However, they had a plan. They kept their wits about them and scrambled back into the game with a 7-0 burst to make it 26-20 with about ten minutes left in the first half. Providence continued their long climb out of the hole to take a 35-34 lead with under five minutes left. That score was a second chancer. At that stage of the game they had scored nine points via that method. Providence had an overwhelming 18-2 advantage for the game in that category alone. The game then was stabilized at a give and take see-saw affair that saw Minnehaha back up 48-47 at the break.

The second half had a definite change in defensive strategy for the Lions. The moved away from man to an extended 2/3 zone. That shift was enough to put sand in the gears of the Minnehaha offense. No longer were they able to get to the rim at will (or free throw line). More touches became involved on offense. MA started with the ball to open the second half, but it was the Lions that were ready to roar. They opened with five straight scores initiated by Maddyn Greenway’s back-to-back 3s. MA recognized that it was no longer the same contest and called a timeout after only 1:15 had slipped by. Providence again had a five straight scoring run to turn a 66-63 game to a 76-63 game. And that game was slipping away from a frustrated MA. They were mired in a nine-possession scoring drought. Five of those possessions were turnovers. Three were missed threes. After a literal punch in the mouth to Emma Millerbernd which resulted in a MA technical because of the overexuberance in trying to clear a rebound, made the score 81-63. There was 7:03 left in the game, but the writing was on the wall.

That zone change propelled Providence to victory. MA was scoring every 3.19 touches in the first half. They scored at a healthy 114.3 pp100 clip, turned it over only three times (or every 51 touches), and were playing fast scoring 15/27 on three touch plays or 55.6%. Longer possessions for the Redhawks then were 2/7 or 28%. The second half was flipped. Three touches or less only were converted 5/19 for 26%. Longer possessions of seven or more (which took them off their speed rhythm, was only 3/9 for 33%.

All that contrasted with the opening few minutes where Minnehaha was scoring at a 162.5 pace to only 81.2 for Providence. That took us to 26-13 MA. Mack was scoring every 1.6 touches and had 10 points. Greenway was scoring every 2.8 touches with five points. Then Greenway got a head of steam and rolled the rest of the way with a whopping 51 points. She almost made the 71 club (one short). Mack made the 51 Club with two to spare. But her then game high 25 first half points were bottled up in the second half. At one point deep in the second half she had only added five to her totals. Joining these two in the 31 Club were Emma Millerbernd with 36 before fouling out and MA’s Amina Allen on the nose with 31.

The zone limited free throws. In the first half MA shot 12. They were only able to add four attempts in the second half. Another factor in the Providence win was the relentless rebounding. The Lions all night were cleaning the glass with a plus 18 advantage, with a whopping 19-5 advantage on the offensive glass. We already noted the 18-2 win on putbacks. That shift in defense also caused havoc with turnovers for MA. They went from an ideal of 51 touches per turnover in the first half to 13.6 touches per turnover in the second. Their total hard count in that half was 15 miscues.

Providence was remarkably consistent throughout the halves. True they were behind the eight ball early, but their pp100s was 109.3 and 118.2 compared to MA’s 114.3 to a paltry 66.7 in the second half.

Round two will be at Providence on Friday, January 24.

FIRST

Providence

Minnehaha

Points

47

48

PP100

109.3

114.3

R

26

18

TO

8

3

FGA

41

33

FTA

8

12

3- plays

12/35

15/27

7+ plays

2/3

2/7

Touches per point

3.40

3.19

SECOND

Providence

Minnehaha

Points

52

30

PP100

118.2

66.7

R

26

16

TO

9

15

FGA

41

30

FTA

12

4

3- plays

15/39

5/19

7+ plays

0/2

3/9

Touches per point

3.27

6.80

OVERALL

Providence

Minnehaha

Points

99

78

PP100

113.8

89.7

R

52

34

TO

17

18

FGA

79

65

FTA

20

16

3- plays

27/74

20/46

7+ plays

2/5

5/16

Touches per point

3.33

4.58

M Greenway

Mack

Points

20-31==55

25-14==39

PP100

133.3 / 134.8

178.6 / 100

R

29/ 41==70

34-19==53

Touches per point

2.35/ 1.97

1.84/4.14

DAY AHEAD

It is Wednesday so the game totals drop severly.
