Usually, Southwest is in the hunt for the City title. The first meeting this year went to North by 18 points. This year it appears the Polars have a lock on that spot as they got to running time in the first half as they sunk the Lakers 83-33 on the road. North was scorching out of the gate and shot 67% from 2s in the first half (21/31) in addition to 44% from 3s (4/9). North ratcheted up the defensive pressure forcing 22 turnovers to start the game (35 total for the night). That usually led to fast break points. Also leading to fast break points was SW’s idea to press North full court. North had 10 points at about the 15 minute to go mark; 20 points at 13:30; 30 at 11:30; 40 at 7:30 and 50 at 5:30. Then they kind of cooled off. The second half turned frigid at the start for North as they failed to score on their first five possessions. Indeed, the lack of urgency/focus contributed to four turnovers in that start. It didn’t matter. The Lakers were in too deep a hole to make an impact. One area that SW succeeded at was rebounding. They out boarded North 39-33 and actually had a 24-19 offensive rebound to defensive North rebounds or 55.8% advantage. That success rate spells trouble long term in March for North. The longer teams stay alive in postseason, the fewer turnovers they generate because the opponents handle the ball better or make better decisions.

That first half North was sizzling with a pp100 of 141.5 with the starters going 160.6. All five starters were north of 146 pp100. At that stage Brooklyn Pettis had 19 points. She made the 31 Club with a 39 and was joined by teammate Shanya Glover with 36. For the game North dropped to 113.7 pp100 showing a definite cooling in the second half. SW was relatively consistent with a 47.1 for the game, slightly better than the 43.6 for the first 18 minutes.

That marks the fourteenth straight for North who now stand at 16-3. Two of their losses are to section 5AA opponents however: Jordan and SW Christian of Chaska. That could put them as a four seed. Their other loss was to Oakland Tech of California. Washburn is the nearest competitor to North for the city title and the Millers fell to North by 36 in the first meeting.

THE DAY AHEAD

A miniscule five game set awaits the fans today. The only ranked team in action is Eden Prairie who will host section 2AAAA rival Waconia. The most interesting game is probably Richfield at Visitation in Tri-Metro action.

Tuesday 1.29.2025 action and recaps.
