The Crusaders utilized their balance, and height to their advantage and eventually found a way to slow down SESM’s 2000-point scorer Morgan Mathiowetz. The hosts trailed at half 37-27 as they ran into foul trouble in the first half with a pair of their starters picking up three. The high-water mark for SESM came in the second half early with the Knights up 41-30. The next 15 and a half minutes belonged to ML. After that dividing line ML outscored the visitors 35-13 with a robust 112.9 pp100 to what was frustrating to the Knights a 43.3. Before that mark Mathiowetz had 23 points. The rest of the way she only added five to her total. She did not receive much help in the scoring department except for Olivia Schieffert who had 10 at half but only added three more in the second. One reason for the plummeting pp100, which stood at a healthy 102.8 at the break, was the shift in defensive assignments. In the first half Avery Arvig was assigned to guard Mathiowetz, but three fouls necessitated a change. The Keaveny twins picked up the slack with Izabelle doing most of the box & one assignment. SESM was not able to get the flow into their offense and possessions went deep into the shot clock, sometimes without Mathiowetz getting the last touch. When the Knights were in trouble she was the first on the radar. In possessions lasting seven possessions or longer SESM was 1/16 for the game. Meanwhile, on the Crusader side of the ledger, balance was the key word with all five starters scoring between six and nine in that same late game stretch. They were better in the drawn-out possessions going 6/19 for the game.

For the night Mayer had a pp100 of 89 showcasing their own frustrations on the offensive side of the equation in the first half. Then they shot about 25%. SESM’s frigid second half dragged their 102.8 pp100 down to 74. Other key metrics belonging to the ML camp included a 46-35 rebound advantage and scoring 18 free throws to 14. The Crusaders did not let SESM get to the line that much in the second half, holding them to only six attempts after allowing 14 in the first half. The turnaround also was their two players with three fouls in the first half were relatively clean in the second half, but SESM soon had a few players of their own with too many fouls and that hampered their efforts. Both teams benches were not potent as neither provided a point for either squad. Just looking at starters, ML’s pp100 was 95 to 74.

Mathiowetz made the 31 Club alone in the first half with 19 points. She did crack the 41 Club in the second half with 28 points, 12 d stops and five distributions for a total of 45. Clara Keaveny was the 31 Club representative for ML with a score of 39 on 21 points, 12 d stops and six distributions. Down the 15:30 stretch Marley Martin of ML had 18 in the 31 Club (she was second for the night for the Crusaders at 27). She had 6 points in the last 15 with a 200 pp100, 7 d stops and was 5/6 on her distributions. One advantage for Martin was her ability to tap rebound able balls to her teammates.

DAY AHEAD

40 games on tap for Saturday including another Breakdown event.
