That was the word to describe the weather outside the gym last night at Andover, but it also described the offensive efforts of the Huskies. You would think with a name like Huskies they would enjoy the cold. There was nothing enjoyable about a pp100 of 29.9 for the hosts. Elk River put running time on Andover in a 56-20 win. True that running time didn’t kick in until 1:05 remained in the contest. Back in the day when I was coaching, I strived to get my team to score 10 points every four minutes (this was back in the day of 8-minute quarters). That meant after the first quarter I expected to see at least 20 points on the scoreboard for my team. 20 points after 36 minutes would create ulcers for me.

Andover, last year’s section 7AAAA champ, lost a lot to graduation and then lost coach Blake Nicols to Lakeville South. They are in a rebuilding mode. Aubrey Draves has taken the reigns for the Huskies. She has height in her lineup. Three players are 6-2 or bigger and two start. Both freshman Logan Miller (6-3) and sophomore Myla Evers (6-2) had five blocks each as ER kept trying to score inside on the pair. Those rim protectors definitely altered and prevented shots. What the Elks feasted on were turnovers. The Huskies had difficulties negotiating the full court press. ER did a great job of reading the action and anticipating passes to the tune of 31 turnovers. That was one turnover every 9.71 touches. Andover scored at the rate of one point every 15.05 touches. Those turnovers led to transition scoring. ER turned it over less frequently—every 23.74 touches for a total of 19 on the night.

ER was not at top form offensively either, if top form is 100 pp100. They checked in with an 82.4 pp100 which was more than enough to offset the lowly 20 points and 29.9 pp100. Both squads were 0 for first half behind the arc (7 attempts for ER, 4 four Andover). That improved in the second half for ER with five conversions. Andover never connected. Elsie Ostmoe of ER topped the scoring list with 13 points on a robust 144.4 pp100. She added 11 d stops and ended up with the best 31 Club score of 27.

So why this game? Andover was ranked in the top 55 (heading into this game) on the QRF scale. The Huskies are 10-10 now on the year. ER is 14-6 on the year and with an important win at Brainerd is poised to be the #2 seed in 8AAAA.

DAY AHEAD

Tuesday is generally the busiest day of the week, and it is again, but only with 124 games on tap, down from last week’s 153.
