She is the sixth family member to get 1000. Her mother did it at Cavalier, ND; her aunt at Devils Lake. Both played at North Dakota in college.

ABOUT LAST NIGHT…..Wayzata v Woodbury

Another day, another running time match up. I went to Woodbury to see the Royals. I am picking off some of the midlevel type teams, QRF rated 50-70, when the opportunity presents itself. Monday it was #58 Andover, yesterday #67 Woodbury. Both days I saw the clock tick away late. Last night the #5AAAA Trojans overcame a tight first half to pour it on in the second half in a 75-30 victory. They held the hosts to only 8 second half points (my ulcer would be off the charts—see yesterday’s comments).

The first half was a different tale. With 6:03 left Wayzata called time with a slim 18-17 lead. The next 24 minutes were 57-13. One factor in the Wayzata domination was their control of the glass. They grabbed offensive boards at a 57.8% clip (26 for them on offense; 19 for Woodbury on defense). But Woodbury also had some modest success on the offensive glass too rebounding at a 48.6% clip. Currently the best (the top%) in the NBA is 31.6%. the lowest is 19.7%. Clearly in high school this is a mark that can be improved by ALL teams. Another key advantage for the visitors was the turnover battle. The Trojans only had 8, the Royals 27. Translation: Wayzata had 41.88 touches per turnover. Woodbury 11.52.

The last six minutes of the first half launched the Trojans to victory. At the break it was 31-22. With 15 minutes left it was 36-27. Woodbury would only muster three more points the rest of the way. Wayzata opened the second half with five straight scores. Included in that burst was one possession where they had five cracks at scoring. Then Wayzata senior Sophie Hawkinson found her groove. She hit a 3, and made a steal lay up on two consecutive possessions, assisted on the third; after one possession off she then hit two straight 3s added a mid-range shot for 13 of her game high 25 points in the space of six possessions or three minutes of action. Hawkinson made the 41 Club with a score of 44 which included 10 d stops and just missing a true kjasr triple double by one with nine distributions in 18 set ups. Wayzata tacked on another 3 on the next possession and it was 59-29, with running time in site with nine minutes to go.

Another interesting feature of this game was the starters vs. the bench. Wayzata throttled the Woodbury starters 54-15 or 117.4 pp100 to 41.7. The bench also belonged to Wayzata 21-15. The Trojan bench was even better efficiently with 131.2. Woodbury’s reserves matched their starters with 15 points but were more efficient too with 60. How long was the drought for Woodbury? Their last field goal came around 13 minutes left. Their final point, a free throw came on running time at 49.8 ticks left—-18 possessions of bone-dry weather.

DAY AHEAD

A lucky 13 games await Wednesday.
