I made it to the South Suburban, a conference I have not been able to see frequently, to check Eagan off my list. The Wildcats were #33 in the QRF rankings I use. They hosted the Irish in what could be a preview of the section 3AAAA semifinals. I did chart Rosemount in the first weekend of the season when they lost to St. Michael-Albertville at the Breakdown Tip off at Southwest Christian Chaska. That game was down to the wire. This game was even more so.

Early on the Irish had the advantage. Led by the Ramlall sisters the Irish enjoyed their biggest lead at 23-13 with 4:38 remaining in the first half. But then the Rosemount offense dried up. They failed to score in the next nine possessions while Eagan found their groove on eleven unanswered points to head to the locker room with a slim 24-23 lead at the break. Three big themes were emerging in that half: #1 on the last 11 Wildcat points, four came on second chance opportunities. Eagan had 10 offensive boards in the first half, or to put it another way, were rebounding at an offensive clip of of 38.5%. Not exactly overwhelming, but enough of a bump to make a one-point difference. #2 On the last nine possession drought the Irish had four turnovers. They “won” if that is the term turnovers 14-6. They were turning it over every 10.14 touches, compared to a 38.33 mark for the hosts. #3 The Ramlall’s had 21 of the 23 points. There was not a lot of action from the other two starters or bench. In fact, the bench never scored all night. If we just examined starters Rosemount won 52-42. The pp100s for the combined Ramlall’s was an even 100. The rest of the squad was 16.7. Overall Rosemount was 69.7 pp100 for the first half; Eagan 75.0. But the Ramlall’s could have had an even higher pp100 if they eliminated the turnovers. They had a combined nine in 74 touches or an even more frequent 8.22 touches per turnover.

The game remained tight to start the second half, but Eagan enjoyed their biggest margin at 45-37 with 8:58 left in the game. Amisha Ramlall was saddled with three fouls and was on the bench during some of this stretch. But the Luck of the Irish soon changed. They charged back into the contest and with four minutes left was able to get the game to “crunch/clutch” mode trailing 47-43 before adding a pair of free throws from Ashna Ramlall. (NBA definition is five points with five minutes left, I use four minutes because the game is not as long as NBA). Rosemount was sharp for the most part in the close winning 9-7. The game was tied at 52 after a 3 from future Gopher Amisha Ramlall, her 25th point. The next Wildcat possession would decide the game. Senior Jocelyn McClary was fouled on the right block and converted both free throws for the final 54-52 margin. The next 1:37 neither team scored. The next Rosemount possession had three chances fail. Eagan missed their next chance. Another miss for Rosemount led to a defensive rebound and foul. Eagan wasn’t in the bonus yet, so another foul at the 4.8 mark put the Wildcats at the line. They missed the front end and Rosemount had one more chance. There were 1.9 seconds left. They called time and the ball was deflected. Then 2.3 seconds appeared on the clock. But it did not factor in as the Irish turned it over on the throw in for the 28th and final turnover.

For the game Eagan had a 79.4 pp100, Rosemount 76.5. Eagan got a dozen from the bench; Rosemount was shut out in that regard. Rosemount had 35 boards to 29; and was slightly better at the offensive % with 36.4 to 35.7. The deal breaker was the turnover war 28-16.

No player made the 31 Club. That is surprising because Amisha Ramlall, as stated before, had 25 points. That is usually a great sign for membership. But her value added was only five with three d stops, and two distributions on nine set ups leaving her a tantalizing one point shy. Eagan’s closest member was senior Maya Meisinger with 29. Her line included 14 points to go along with a dozen d stops plus three distributions on four set ups.

DAY AHEAD

There are supposed to be 27 games on the menu on Saturday, but I would check the conference websites for any alterations. Three have already been postponed or cancelled. Three ranked teams are supposed to be playing today.

RANKED IN ACTION

AA: Minnehaha; Duluth Marshall

A: Mayer Lutheran

[10,7
Recap of MN GBB Action from Thursday 1.2.2025 D1 HIGH FIVE Tamia Ugass, Kansas City, Roseville 26 Amber Scalia, St. Thomas MN, Stillwater 23 Jenna Guyer, Green Bay, Centennial 22 Anna Miller, Drake, Rochester Mayo 20 Nunu Agara, Stanford, Hopkins 19 Anna Olson, Vermont, Monticello 19 TOTAL: 110 Five of…
D1 There were six teams playing on Friday. *Alayna Contreras, Middle Tennessee, Hopkins 15-W Anna Stromberg, Radford, Legacy Christian 2-W Totals: 17 points, 2-0 This is Stromberg’s first appearance on the D1 HF list.
