Ranked Upsets:<\/strong> Two 6s won Friday: Chaska won the AAAA consolation round and Caledonia moved forward in the AA consolation bracket. Rock Ridge was not as fortunate in the AAA consolation round. Three lower seeded teams won in A, with only Mayer Lutheran dodging an upset bullet (at least on Friday). #8 WHA keeps playing after busting Cromwell-Wright. The two A semis are evaluated below.<\/p>\n

ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026.A & AA Semifinals<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

It was a topsy-turvy day in A while in AA games went according to seed (at least in the championship round) to set up an epic unbeaten clash between #1 Providence and #2 Crosby-Ironton. This will only be the second time in the four-class era that there will be two unbeatens facing each other for the top prize. The other time came in 2017 in the AAAA title game with Elk River prevailing over Hopkins.<\/p>\n

In the smallest class there were big upsets. #4 seed West Central ruined #1 Goodhue\u2019s hopes for a repeat with a 58-50 victory. The Wildcats were #1 in the polls all season long. It also prevented a chance for four #1s to win all the classes in the seeding era. 2018 is the only year all four classes #1s left with a crown. The Knights will be joined by #7 seed MACCRAY who bumped off #3 seed Sleepy Eye St. Mary\u2019s. Both WC & MACCRAY were not even the #1 seeds in their subsections. Both were #2s. On top of that MACCRAY was not in the top 10 poll at the end of the year, the only finalist to achieve that this season.<\/p>\n

Goodhue\u2019s pp100 dropped 30 points from Thursday\u2019s scores. Defense and shooting matter. You shoot good, you look good. The Wildcats were 18\/49 (36.7%) from 2s and only 2\/17 (11.8%) from 3s. WC, by contrast was sparkling at 15\/29 (51.7) from 2s and 4\/13 (30.8) from 3s. MACCRAY was the best behind the arc Friday with 38.1% (8\/21).<\/p>\n

Both teams that won had issues with ball control\/decision making. WC lost that battle to Goodhue 24-17. MACCRAY lost that battle to SESM\u00a0 15-5. Both winning teams did win the battle of the boards 43-37 for WC, 47-33 for MACCRAY.<\/p>\n

This will be the first time a 4 seed will be the favorite (based on seeding) in the A final. Only Win-E-Mac in the first year of the A seeding in 2014 won the tournament. The best finish for #4 seed in A has been third (not counting the virus year where Waterville-Elysian-Morristown was a finalist). There have been two other unseeded teams that finished second: Sleepy Eye (Public) in 2018, and Minneota in 2022. Minneota beat #1 Mountain Iron-Buhl in the opening round that year in overtime.<\/p>\n

#4s in the other classes: Caledonia finished second in 2019; four #4s finished second in AAA; and there have been eight thirds in AAAA.<\/p>\n

Both AA favorites moved on and beat a \u201cMinne\u201d in some form. All eyes have been waiting for this upcoming confrontation. The Lions got to the title game with another running time victory at state over another team that made state as a #2 seed in their subsection. CI established their gap in the first half with a 16 point half time lead (40-24) then withstood the inevitable Red Hawk defensive ramp up. Shoot good you look good works at the AA level too. The Rangers\u00a0 were 27\/38 for 71% on 2s. They needed that to offset the turnover mark of 23 or one every 14.83 touches. The Redhawks were only 18\/43 on 2s.<\/p>\n

This marks the second day Janssen, Mathiowetz and Oehrlein made the 31 Club. Janssen improved reaching the 51 Club (with 54) from Thursday\u2019s 47. Her pp100s also rose to centurion level. Mathiowetz joined her in the centurion circle Friday after missing out Thursday. She made the 41 Club, down from her 51 Club level in the overtime win over EGF Sacred Heart Thursday. The third member in the 31 Club in A was Kendyll Lodermeier of #1 seed Goodhue. However, her pp100 did not reach 70.<\/p>\n

In AA Oehrlein made the list the second time. Both times she has been a member of the 51 Club. She was three better Friday night and her pp100 increased eight. Providence, a team I did not chart Wednesday, overwhelmed the spots with four of their five starters getting to the 31 Club. All seven 31 Clubbers cracked the centurion circle. The Lions depth is for real. The best pp100 in any class Friday belonged to McKenna Schefer of Providence. The range of pp100s went from her score to 123.8. No other contingent in AA surpassed that mark.
