The reunion came with the coaches. The Skippers Caitlin Hawkins at one point assisted the Tigers coach Rodney Lossow at Roosevelt. Hawkins then replaced Lossow as the Teddies coach when Lossow took over at South. Hawkins left the state to teach in Arkansas and is now back and is at the helm of one of the newer programs out there.

Both teams came into the match looking for win number two. The Skippers got six victories with first singles going to South. The interesting feature in this match today was the three tight sets all took place in the second set—two of which went to extra points. In each case the Skippers prevailed.

SINGLES

1 Nina Nguyen, S def Francesca Iannone 21-16, 21-10

2 Charlotte Emanoff, M def Audrey Rathjen 21-8, 23-21

3 Vivienne Rowen, M def Nasteho Abdi 21-14, 21-8

4 Josie Mintz, M def Riley Olson 21-16, 21-10

DOUBLES

1 Vivian Nguyen / Allison Lei, M def Maniratu Shaibu / Abigael Abrehem 21-8, 21-19

2 Maggie Karels / Ruby Kirk, M def Clare Mallery / Frances Piker 21-4, 21-9

3 Olivia Pederson / Ella Farnum, M def Sia Sandi / Nana Bengaura 21-9, 22-20

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Minnetonka 3-1 .750
Games: Minnetonka 6-2 .750
points: Minnetonka 154-119 .564
Set 1 points: Minnetonka 79-59 .572
Set 2 points: Minnetonka 75-60 .556
decided by 10+: Minnetonka 3-1 .750
decided by 3-: Minnetonka 1-0 1.000
margin: Minnetonka 4.375
DOUBLES
Matches: Minnetonka 3-0 1.000
Games: Minnetonka 6-0 1.000
points: Minnetonka 127-69 .648
Set 1 points: Minnetonka 63-21 .750
Set 2 points: Minnetonka 64-48 .571
decided by 10+: Minnetonka 4-0 1.000
decided by 3-: Minnetonka 2-0 1.000
margin: Minnetonka 9.667

FIRST SINGLES

Nina NGUYEN 2, Francesca IANNONE 0 (Reported 21-10, 21-10 (S) 21-16, 21-10 (M) recorded 21-14, 21-10)

South’s Nina Nguyen was the sole victor on Tuesday. Minnetonka’s Francesca Iannone, who usually is in the second singles spot, moved up due to the absence of Isabel Chen. Both of these players started their match prior to the introductions of the rest of their teammates because of a class Nguyen needed to attend. The rushed nature of the match was due to traffic delays for the Minnetonka bus. The two were not able to get the traditional warm up. Both did warm up in the general sense with their respective squads. Nguyen had the better side out game and avoided errors to paint her win. Nguyen only allowed Iannone seven service points all match while cranking out 25.

In the first set Iannone had the first run and enjoyed a 5-2 lead after her second service. She maintained a lead until Nguyen’s eighth service when she rattled off five straight points after a side out to go in front to stay 14-10. Nguyen tacked on another run of four to stand on the verge at 19-13. In the flow of the first set six of Nguyen’s first eight points came on winners. That tide shifted to three winners in the last 13 points.

Two big runs of five and then seven cemented Nguyen’s advantages in the second set. Again Nguyen had winners coming early with the first four all winners (they weren’t consecutive). After that Nguyen had three more winners with 14 points on errors. Both players had an equal amount of winners in the second set.

For the season Nguyen now is 1-2 at first singles. This was Iannone’s first stint at first singles. She is 1-3 at second singles on the year.

Category

NGUYEN

<td
