#21 EDISON 6, #20 SOUTHWEST 1<\/strong><\/p>\n

Edison traveled to Southwest on Wednesday, and the #21 Tommies dunked the #20 Lakers 6-1. The only victory for SW came at second singles. Edison did get one win at fourth singles by forfeit. The only match to go three sets was at first singles (more on that later). Southwest, if you look at the scores at singles, won both first and second set point margins mainly thanks to Maya at second singles. The Tommies only allowed 46 points across six sets (7.667 points per set). Only one doubles set was decided by less than ten points.<\/p>\n

This was a make-up game. The first contest was postponed due to Edison Coach Troy Willingham being stuck in Egypt due to flight issues.<\/p>\n

This makes Minneapolis the second conference to be completely charted this year. St. Paul was finished last week. There are only four teams of the 30 playing left to be charted.<\/p>\n

FIRST SINGLES <\/strong><\/p>\n

Ada P 2, Kaysa 1 <\/strong>(reported and recorded 19-21, 21-14, 21-13)<\/p>\n

For the third straight match this week a first singles contest went the distance with three sets. Ada Popp of Edison rallied from a first set loss and then only allowed 27 points for her opponent Kaysa the rest of the match. This match had similarities to the first match on Monday between Park Center and Minneapolis North—-then there were lengthy rallies with stroke counts getting to the double digits. Similar situation today. There was one point that lasted 20 strokes. So why is this? I believe the players are hitting right at opponents, not making the others move. The Edina\/Como Park match by contrast featured more movements stretching the court both from the net to the back line and from right to left sidelines.<\/p>\n

Today neither player was able to generate consistent side outs as both finished under .500. Ada won the winners category by nine with drops overwhelmingly the favorite shot with 13 points for winners. Kaysa relied more on drives. Together they combined for only six smashes. 36 of their 54 errors ended up in the net.<\/p>\n

As for the flow of the game—the first set started with Ada getting the first run on serve three for a 4-3 lead. Kaysa\u2019s first run came on her sixth service and she grabbed the lead at that point 11-9. Ada responded immediately with another run of three and reclaimed the lead 12-11. Kaysa jumped back in front 17-13 after her second run of four. Ada still had two runs left cutting the margin to 19-16 and 20-19 holding off set point three straight times. Kaysa closed the set with a four stroke drop to the left.<\/p>\n

In keeping with the first set it was Kaysa getting the first run on service three for a 5-4 lead. She would gain two more during the course of the set. But it was Ada that stretched her runs for longer stretches. Four straight gave her an 8-5 lead. She cemented her lead with five more at 16-11. Kaysa fought back with her final run of three to make it 16-14. Ada closed the set with the final five points including two drops.<\/p>\n

Ada put her imprint on the final set with two runs on second and third service for a 7-2 lead. Kaysa cut the gap to 7-5 with her first run of three. Her next run of three narrowed the lead further at 14-13. But Ada closed hard just like in the first set, although this time it was an avalanche of seven straight points initiated by six straight winners which was an unusual streak in this contest.<\/p>\n
