For the third time this week, PC has picked up a victory. This time the opponent was Fridley, a third-year program looking for their first win in program history. The Pirates rearranged their line up at the singles with eighth grader Angela Yang back in the top slot. More on that match below. The Tigers were able to get two wins at second singles and first doubles and both of those went to three sets. Fridley was also able to win two extra point sets, both in their match wins. The Pirates had seven sets that were decided by ten points or more. The margins proved to be a little more at doubles at 4.143 compared to singles at 3.889.

Even though this is the third year of the Fridley program this is the first year for new coach Rhyan Loriezo. In previous years Fridley played two or three matches per season. This is their second contest of the year. Today was PC’s third match of the week. Fridley are road warriors. They have never hosted a home match.

I am still awaiting the names from Fridley. The whole first set was a shut out for Yang with ten straight side outs. Yang also took advantage whenever the bird was in smash position with 15 on the day. Overall winners were overwhelmingly in favor of Yang 30-3.

But the match didn’t start out that hot for Yang. She missed her first two services before gaining her first five point run and pushing out to a 7-2 lead. She tacked on another run immediately after increasing the margin to 10-3 and then the lights went out. After the power came back on, she missed another serve. The flow reverted to side out world. Yang broke free again on her ninth service with another run of five initiated with a twelve-stroke smash to the right. Somehow the count was off as I had Yang scoring 22 points in the match.

Fridley jumped out to a 4-0 start in the second set before Yang cranked it up. On service two she had a run of three to trail 4-3. On her fourth service the floodgates opened with a twelve-point run. That hole proved to be too steep to climb out for the Tiger. Yang finished with the last five points of the match.

Category

YANG

<td
