The Gryphons of Eagle Ridge picked up their first win of the season in a 5-2 win over the visiting Fridley Tigers. Fridley took the top singles and doubles slots, but ER took the rest of the position. The only match that went to three sets was at first doubles with a difference of five points. Two sets went to extra points and both of those were claimed by ER. Again, one came at first doubles in the first set. Shana Bhakta at fourth singles also won by the same 23-21 margin in the first set.

Today was to cap the final thirty badminton schools, but yesterday’s threatening weather threw a wrench into that plan. The Tiger had a slightly better side out game and more than doubled up on her winners 26-12. The drive was effective for Pettis with 10 going for winners including a sequence of four straight three stroke winners after trailing 14-10 in set two. However Pettis also led in errors 22-16 with her serve betraying her eight times including six in set two. Despite that, Pettis survived. Potini was limited to only five winners in that second set and only one came directly after those missed serve.

At the start of the match it was Potini that was having serving issues. She opened with three straight missed serves. That would be the extent of her misses, but it also put her in the hole at 8-3. Soon Pettis was up 13-7. Then Pettis opened the door with a Potini run with her own missed serve. Potini tied it up at 13 with her second run, this time with six points. Pettis then closed the door holding Potini to one point off her service the rest of the set.

Pettis jumped out to a 5-1 start but she stopped herself with missed serves on her first four services and that helped Potini knot it up at eight. Potini’s longest run gave her a 14-10 advantage before Pettis revved up her drive game.

Category

<td
