Thirteen days ago, the Eagles went into Edina and lost 6-1 with Kateryna Mykhailovich stunning Hazel Dang for the only Kennedy win. That vaulted Mykhailovich to the second spot in the singles rankings. In the last poll she moved into number one position. Today that match was flipped, and no Hornet lost a set in any contest. On April 17 the Eagles took three sets, with Dechen pushing Aarushi Bhatnagar at second singles to three sets. That didn’t happen either today. Both the singles and doubles contingents for the Hornets were eerily similar with their point percentages—.675 & .677—almost mirroring each other. Both singles and doubles came up with five double digit set wins. There was only one set that was close (defined by three points or less) with Bhatnagar getting a three-point win in the first set against Dechen today. After that match the closest any singles got was 12. The best score in doubles for Kennedy today was 16 points in the first set of third doubles.

Edina now moves to 16-0 on the year. Kennedy is 8-6.

SINGLES

1 Hazel Dang, E def Kateryna 21-12, 21-6

2 Aarushi Bhatnagar, E def Dechen 21-18, 21-17

3 Evelyn, E def Abby 21-11, 21-10

4 Claire Watz, E def Allison 21-4, 21-3

DOUBLES

1 Sanna Coma / Ivy Peterson, E def Saray / Brianda 21-7, 21-8

2 Bergen / Juman, E def Huda / Nasteha 21-10, 21-10

3 Ella / Daisy, E def Felicity / Emily 21-16, 21-9

BY THE NUMBERS
SINGLES
Matches: Edina 4-0 1.000
Games: Edina 8-0 1.000
points: Edina 168-81 .675
Set 1 points: Edina 84-45 .651
Set 2 points: Edina 84-36 700
decided by 10+: Edina 5-0 1.000
decided by 3-: Edina 1-0 1.000
margin: Edina 10.875
DOUBLES
Matches: Edina 3-0 1.000
Games: Edina 6-0 1.000
points: Edina 126-60 .677
Set 1 points: Edina 63-33 .656
Set 2 points: Edina 63-27 .700
decided by 10+: Edina 5-0 1.000
decided by 3-: none
margin: Edina 11.000

FIRST SINGLES

Hazel DANG 2, Kateryna MYKHAILOVICH 0
(Reported & Recorded 21-12, 21-6)

#3 Hazel Dang extracted her revenge on #1 Kateryna Mykhailovich and it was not close. Dang dictated where the bird was going, forcing Mykhailovich to scramble to get in the proper spot all day. Dang shut the door on Mykhailovich’s serve, allowing only six service points in the entire match (30-6 .833). Dang overwhelmed on serve, scoring .714 of her points that way. Another big difference was on two strokes or less rallies at 14-1— .933. Winners were solidly in favor of Dang 29-10—.743 with drops leading the charge with seven. Dang also limited her errors to four per set.

The match started out with Dang at the service line and Mykhailovich driving the bird for an early 1-0 lead. That was her last lead in the first set. Dang would score at least one point on her next four services with three runs sprinkled in and a commanding 15-4 lead. Mykhailovich garnered two runs on her sixth and seventh service with a 7-2 advantage, but the hole was too steep. Once Dang got the bird back, she closed with the last two points.

Dang scored on every service (five total) in set two. Still Mykhailovich did get an early lead after two Dang hitting errors. Those errors quickly dried up with only one more provided the rest of the set. The back breaker run came on Dang’s fourth service with eight points (15-4). In this set Dang did not allow any runs. Toward the end of the match the stroke counts started to multiply. Of Dang’s final seven points, four were over ten strokes long, indicating both players were adjusting. Still Dang won all the mega stroke points.

No doubt the singles rankings will go through a shuffle again for week seven’s poll with a new number one. The tightly bunched race for the singles crown could be any number of players. I said the state quarters will be juicy. Who can withstand the rigors of six matches will prevail. We are talking both physically in addition to not making mental errors. Today Dang looked extremely sharp.

Category

DANG

<td
