ABOUT LAST NIGHT (OR TWO)\u2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The action over the past three days and nights in a word\u2026.ragged. But that is what we have come to expect in November contests. There will be three full months to polish and buff up the offenses, eliminating miscommunication, eliminating questionable decision making, and sharpening up their shooting eye. It is rare for teams to come out fully formed at the start of the year. There are new coaches, new additions, and players need to step up for graduating 2025s. Keep in mind that these teams are being tested right out of the gates with high quality opposition. Some schools got a game in on Thursday before their Saturday spotlight games at the Breakdown Tip Off.<\/p>\n

NEW SURROUNDINGS<\/strong><\/p>\n

COACHES<\/strong><\/p>\n

Successful coaching debuts came for Betty Trull at Hill-Murray replacing Hall of Fame Coach Erin Herman. The Pioneers topped Eden Prairie 82-68. Also replacing a Hall of Fame legend was Dre Jefferson at Minnetonka. He moved over from Edina and opened with an 84-67 victory over Crosby-Ironton.<\/p>\n

PLAYERS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Coaches were not the only ones making debuts\u2026. two were on their third school in three years. Sophomore Sarah Poepard is now at Hill-Murray after stops at White Bear Lake and Mahtomedi and was part of the 31 Club too (see below). Alivia Bell goes from champion to champion—leaving Hopkins for Benilde-St. Margaret\u2019s. Before that she was at Winona. Another move, another victory. Rosemount added Farmington\u2019s Gianna Carpentier who helped in the win over Wayzata.<\/p>\n

UNDEFEATED NO MORE<\/strong><\/p>\n

AA powers Providence and Crosby-Ironton last year met in the finals unblemished. If that meeting were to happen in March, they both will have a mark on their record after both fell to Lake juggernauts Hopkins and Minnetonka. Both smaller schools did not duck quality teams facing the stiffest opponents around.<\/p>\n

The game of the day, judging crowd size, and flavor of the game was game 6: AAAA state champion Hopkins vs AA state champion Providence. The Lions are adjusting to life without a Counts patrolling the paint.<\/p>\n

Early on Hopkins was clicking. Providence had already burned one time out trying to disrupt the Royal rhythm but Ava Cupito, back from an injury, capped a six straight possession string with a triple making it 15-5. That lead expanded to 29-12 with another Providence time out coming at 9:46 after another Cupito 3 and three straight Hopkins three-point plays. The offensive fireworks continued with Hopkins rolling to a 47-32 half time lead. But Hopkins also with their aggressive, physical play were picking up fouls. That was to prove important in the second half. They still had advantages with 104.4 pp100 to 72.7; turnovers were at 14-6 (and the corresponding touch per turnover at 28.9 to 9.29).<\/p>\n

The pace slowed down in the second half, moving from 45 possessions to 42. But the key actions came with the tallies of fouls. Some fouls coaches cannot stand is the 80-foot foul variety. Hopkins\u2019 Erma Walker exited with five fouls with a back court foul with 9:29 left in the game. It was her second foul in about 30 seconds, and it came just after she had converted a steal and a layup making the score 64-49. Her fourth foul was of the offensive variety. This sparked Providence who finished that last 9:29 with a 25-14 surge. Walker wasn\u2019t the only Royal to end up on the pine before the final horn. Joining her as a spectator was offensive motor Jaliyah Diggs. She left the stage at the 1:17 mark after fouling Maddyn Greenway. The two had been in battle all game. After one converted free throw Hopkins was nursing a 74-71 lead. Lanaia Durant scored on a runner for the next Hopkins points to give some breathing room 76-71. Beckett Greenway stole an errant pass, scored the lay up to make it a one possession game 76-73 and Providence called time at 39.3. Eighth grader Marianna Davis scored on the next possession for Hopkins. Providence had the ball with seven seconds left down 78-74 but a desperate deep 3 attempt failed to connect and ended the 45-game winning streak.<\/p>\n

Providence has a history of finishing strong. They outscored Hopkins 42-31 in the second half, 25-14 after Walker left. Their pp100 also reflected that at 97.7-73.8 for the second half and an even better 119.0-70.0 down the stretch. Maddyn Greenway almost had a 31 Club score in the second half alone with a 30 based on 16 points, 9 d stops and five distributions. The tremendous change for Providence came eliminating their turnovers to a more manageable one turnover every 19.75 touches. Hopkins was not smoking on offense like the first half going 11\/29 on three touches or less compared to the first half of 18\/39.<\/p>\n

The lesson from this is that Providence will not go quietly in any game. And Hopkins needs to avoid 80-foot fouls.<\/p>\n

OVERALL PP100 <\/strong><\/p>\n

For the week (abbreviated with only three days) we had eleven contests. And the results speak to the \u201cragged\u201d nature of the exhibitions and the early season hiccups of November. There were only three centurions in the mix. The average for 22 teams was 83.5 pp100 with winners checking in at 90.97 and losers at 76.07. That means the margin was 14.9. The best score came from Lakeville North with a 105.4. The best defense came from Mountain Iron-Buhl with their win over Hillcrest Lutheran on Friday with a 59.2<\/p>\n

There were some eyebrows raised with AAA performing better over AAAA slightly at 86.625 to 86.442. Both Delano and Hill-Murray had wins over AAAA teams Centennial and Eden Prairie. AA was not far off the pace with 84.3 with the top two teams falling to AAAA powers. A was way off the pace with 71.275.<\/p>\n

CONFERENCE CALLS<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Lake was not so \u201cGreat\u201d on Saturday finishing 2-4 on the main feature court. Only Hopkins and Minnetonka were victorious. On top of that their pp100s for the group of six was only 86.25. The conference now making a claim as the top is the South Suburban with a 3-0 mark including two wins in their head-to-head with the Lake (Rosemount over Wayzata and Eastview over STMA). Their pp100s were a healthy 95.2. Is the tide turning with the Lake in favor of the SS? The Tuesday matchup at Minnetonka will test this theory when Lakeville North pays a visit. Both the Skippers and the Panthers were centurion\u2019s this week. This rivalry will be closely tracked the rest of the year. Will March see an all Lake like the last three (using current membership)? Or will the South Suburban crash the party?<\/p>\n

31 CLUB+<\/strong><\/p>\n

There were 21 players that joined the 31 Club this week with nine of those cracking the 41 Club and two of those pushing past that ceiling to the 51 Club. Tori Oehrlein and Maddyn Greenway, the two AA linchpins for their teams got to 51 or better. But their teams lost out, albeit to AAAA powerhouses. Both came up short on the pp100 scale, falling under 100. Oehrlein\u2019s teammate Lucy Lewandowski were the only AA players to make the Club. A had zero entries, AAA added seven with AAAA leading the way with eleven.<\/p>\n

Six schools had two or more with Hill-Murray topping all with three players. However, simply having more than one did not guarantee a victory for the team, as seen with Crosby-Ironton, DeLaSalle, and Eden Prairie.<\/p>\n

Two players are sisters: Mya and Ashlee Wilson of Hill-Murray. Ashlee is the youngest on the list as a member of the 2030 class (eighth grade).<\/p>\n

Two players made the prestigious list by coming off the bench: Nesa Namjoshi of EP and Sophia Anderson of MG. Both their teams lost.<\/p>\n

Sophomore Maggie Dyer of Rochester Mayo had a strong day with a best 143.5 pp100 of the 31 Clubbers. Teammate Sophomore Amelia Mills got to the 1000-point mark to go along with 118.5 pp100. Another 1000-point mark went to Chaska senior Addie Schneider. Also getting a milestone on Saturday was Maddyn Greenway with 1000 rebounds. That puts her in the rare air with a triple-quadruple 1000—- with points, steals and assists.<\/p>\n

The won loss mark for 31 Clubbers? 11-10. This means that the ten players whose teams lost have issues that need to be resolved. Do you need a 31 Clubber to win? No. Rosemount and Benilde-St. Margaret\u2019s both had wins without 31 Club representation. So did the A winners on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Providence\u2019s 45 game winning streak was snapped by Hopkins in a battle of state champions at the Breakdown Tip Off Saturday in the marquee game.<\/p>\n

The streaks are still alive for Hopkins (who halted Providence) and Benilde-St. Margaret\u2019s. West Central, the A champion from 2025, has yet to play. That means the longest streak going right now belongs to Benilde-St. Margaret\u2019s with fourteen.<\/p>\n
