ABOUT LAST NIGHT\u2026..ORONO V BENILDE-ST. MARGARET\u2019S <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

#2 Orono rallied to topple #1 Benilde-St. Margaret\u2019s in a Metro West battle with section 6AAA implications. Leading the way was senior Mya Moore with 51 points. She set a new school record for most points scored in a single game in the process.<\/p>\n

The Spartans trailed by five at the break 39-34. BSM added to their margin with an old fashioned &1 on their first possession making the comeback rally eight. The Spartans quickly made up ground on the first three possessions of the second half cutting their deficit to 42-41. After one empty possession they strung together another run of four to pull in front 51-47. All this took place in four minutes. The 17-8 start had Moore\u2019s fingerprints all over it. She had 15 of those points and delivered on three of her game high six 3s for the night. BSM kept the game close. Indeed, they regained the lead at 56-55 after a shot from Pressley Watkins on the right block with under 9:30 to go. A bucket on the right block by Lilah Rice kept Orono in front to stay. Still the game was only a one possession type game with under five minutes left 70-68. Then Moore, on a drive to the lane was stripped of the ball. She retaliated, according to the officials, giving BSM two intentional free throws and the ball. They missed both free throws and then missed a three and a put back attempt in their next crack at a possession. Orono was fired up at this point and went on another four possession scoring string while the Red Knights offense faltered. Orono utilized the 3 point shot with three consecutive makes with Moore starting it off with two. What was a tight contest mushroomed into a solid win. That 11-0 run left a steep uphill climb with Orono\u2019s margin now 81-68. There were only two minutes left in the game at this point and the Spartans kept the margin.<\/p>\n

You can tell that this game was high skill with the pp100 for BSM approaching the century mark. Too many times this year I have to chart games where the losing team is mired below 70 pp100. I believe the key difference here was the strings that Orono put together in the second half. They had three, BSM one. The result of these strings were 28-6. Eliminating those strings would make the score BSM 66, Orono 55.<\/p>\n

Looking at the main stat categories you will notice that Orono had big advantages on the boards getting 50% of their missed shots. BSM on the other hand had offensive boards at a 41.9% clip. The other huge advantage was the 3 game. Orono had 33 points or 39.8% of their total from deep. BSM had 12. Again taking away that factor and BSM wins 60-50.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that BSM was well aware of Moore and had several players assigned to guard her. One player fouled out guarding her as she drew ten fouls for the night. Orono, who I charted against St. Michael-Albertville at St. Benedict. Did not display the defensive headaches, but that is probably due to better ball handling. Still the touches per turnovers favored the Spartans 26.33 to 14.<\/p>\n

Last season, the Spartans won both conference games with BSM. The return match will take place at the Red Knights\u2019 home on Thursday, January 29. If the Spartans win that match, the chances are high they will be the number one seed. BSM took down Orono on the road last year in the section final on their way to their third state straight title. At the least the chances are good that the two teams will flip in the polls next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n

There was only one player that cracked the 31 Club. Mya Moore zoomed past that marker on the way to the 61 Club. This is the second time in two weeks that Moore has reached that lofty level. Moore qualified for the 51 Club based on points alone. \u00a0She also had a double-double with 11 d stops. Her third leg of the 31 Club total had four distributions on 13 potentials. She had a 141.7 pp100 for the day.<\/p>\n
