CROIX LUTHERAN

In the battle for West St. Paul it was public school Two Rivers (really located in Mendota Heights) over host private school St. Croix Lutheran 68-45 and it was never really in doubt. The one-two punch of Isabelle Van Nett and Sophia Amundson (30 and 24 points respectively) was more than enough to offset Callie Oakland 29. Only three Crusaders were able to score on the night so most of the scoring burden fell to lefthander Oakland. Oakland, who has been a fixture for the Crusaders for five years, is called on this year to bring the ball up court along with Amaya Penn.

The game started off physical, but sluggish. The first time out came by SCL after one minute and a half was eclipsed and the score tied at zero. It was tied at 4 when the game broke hard for TR. The Warriors rode a 19-6 burst. By that time TR had three of their seven game 3s cashed in. Van Nett had established herself with a dozen of those points including a three possession scoring string. SCL only had one field goal in their first 10 points, the rest came at the free throw line. By half TR led 31-16 and that was because Oakland heaved a half court three at the buzzer. The game did not change from the first half trajectory in the second half. The only issue for TR came when both Van Nett and Amundson sat down, both for fouls. But the hole was too steep to climb out of for SCL. The two did return to action to settle the waters.

Prior to the game Wurst left the warm ups for SCL with a leg injury. That may have affected the offensive system for SCL.

TR had a combined shooting percentage of 153 compared to the hosts 105. The Crusaders had a big advantage at the line with double the attempts of the Warriors and making more (14) than TR attempted (11). There were 29 fouls in the game with TR “winning” that battle 18-11.

Team

Pt

PP100

OR/DR

FTM/a

2M/A

3M/A

TO/TOTO

Two River

68

100.0

23/31

9/11

19/38

7/32

14/20.64

St. Croix Lutheran

45

65.2

21/23

14/22

11/37

3/25

17/21.65

Guard Isabelle Van Nett hit for 30 points on her way to the 41 Club with a score of 47. She was a perfect eight for eight at the line and delivered four of ten from behind the arc. Van Nett led the team with ten d stops. Her distribution mark could be higher. But it was not from a lack of trying. She had 23 set up passes, but teammates only converted seven for a 30.43 mark. She was joined by TR teammate Sophia Amundson who scored 24 points. Joining Van Nett in the 41 Club was Oakland right on the nose with 41. She led all players with 11 d stops on the night. The Warriors have moved up a class in the latest reshuffling of sections and are now living in 4AAAA which looks like East Ridge’s property for an opportunity for the first state trip. If TR gets to the section final that would be considered a success. But Suburban East schedules for Woodbury, White Bear Lake and Stillwater are all much tougher than the Metro East lightweights. St. Croix Lutheran is 7-6 on the year and they live in 4AA. They too should consider it a successful season if they make the section finals. I don’t see Minnehaha being denied a state birth however. The Crusaders will need help beyond Oakland and Penn to get to that spot.

DAY AHEAD

There are 16 ranked teams in action today.

AAAA

#1 Hopkins travels to Buffalo

#3 Maple Grove travels to #4AA Duluth Marshall

#7 Eastview hosts Farmington

AAA

#1 Orono hosts New Prague

#2 Benilde-St. Margaret’s travels to Chanhassen

#4 Stewartville hosts Kasson-Mantorville

#7 Byron hosts Lake City

#9 Delano travels to Southwest Christian Chaska

#10 DeLaSalle travels to Bloomington Kennedy

AA

#1 Providence travels to St. Francis

#2 Crosby-Ironton hosts Monticello

#3 New London-Spicer travels to Dassel-Cokato

#5 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton hosts Breckenridge

#6 Red Wing travels to Rochester JM

#7 Perham hosts Detroit Lakes

#8 Foley travels to St. Cloud Cathedral

A

#2 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s hosts New Ulm Cathedral

#4 Northome/Kelliher travels to Clearbrook-Gonvick

#7 Mayer Lutheran hosts BOLD

#8 Hayfield/Schaeffer Academy hosts Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton

#9 Pine River-Backus travels to Laporte

[10,138,7,153,16,17,18
D1 HIGH FIVE There were 20 teams playing on Wednesday. *Tori McKinney, Minnesota, Minnetonka 23-W *Mara Braun, Minnesota, Wayzata 22-W *Lily Fandre, Lehigh, Eagan 21-L *Addi Mack, Maryland, Minnehaha 20-L *Madison Mathiowetz, South Dakota State, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 13-W Kendall McGee, Creighton, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 13-W *Callin Hake, Nebraska, Chanhassen…
D1 HIGH FIVE There were 28 teams playing on Sunday. *Olivia Olson, Michigan, Benilde-St. Margaret’s 23-W *Liv McGill, Florida, Hopkins 18-L *Mara Braun, Minnesota, Wayzata 16-W *Tiny Lewis, Eastern Illinois, Minnehaha 14-L *Kierra Wheeler, West Virginia, Cooper 12-W Totals: 83 points, 3-2 Two AAAA; two AAA; one AA player.
