This was Wayzata’s first win over a suburban team as well. But the Trojans were able to get to double digits in the singles sets four times and three times in doubles. Doubles outperformed singles with a margin score of 10.333 for the doubles to 6.889 for singles. Singles had the most intriguing matches. Minnetonka had a set win at fourth singles, their only set win of the day. After that the tables were turned. Inaaya Afsheen bounced back from the 21-11 loss in the first set to 180 that score in her favor. Then in the clincher she did herself three better to win 21-8. Dhiriti Edpuganti at second singles had the longest match of the day (the were the last match to finish at varsity) and the closest with both sets going to extra points. Edpuganti took the first set with 27 points and then had 22 in the win in the second. This was her first win in her career.

The Skippers are now 1-4 on the year.

Wayzata’s courts are not on the main basketball/volleyball court, but are in gyms 7-8-9. This was the second straight match where Leana Shelendich filled in at the top spot. She was 1-2 at second singles prior to this week. On Tuesday she lost at first singles to Kennedy. Minnetonka’s unbeaten number one singles, Isabel Chen, arrived too late to take part in the contest.

This match broke a pattern where services topped out at seven in each set. Today rallies were longer and the number of services per set were 8.5. That did not mean winners ruled the day. Yin took that category 18-8 but the average was only nine per set. Yin made use of the clear five times, while holding Shelendich to zero smashes. Both players had over half their points gifted by her opponent and far and away the leading category was net errors. Shelendich had 20 net errors with attempted drives not finding the other side of the court.

Oddly enough, Shelendich had early leads in both sets. She scored the first point in both sets and in the second had the first run with three right out of the gate. Yin took her first lead at 5-3 after a run of four. Shelendich, on her fourth service, scored her first run to move back in front 7-6. But Yin was able to run with her next two services and moved in front to stay 13-8. Yin had five runs total in the first set, no massive runs like I have charted lately, but enough to maintain the advantage. She closed with a run of three. Yin added four more runs to her totals in the second set. Her first run came on service three and that pushed her in front to stay for that set at 6-4. For some reason, the count let one point slip away and the match ended with Yin ahead 20-12.

Category

<td
