HIGHLAND PARK EDEN PRAIRIE<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is day 3 of Eagle week. Today\u2019s version is Eden Prairie after Kennedy on Monday and Washington on Tuesday. Again I was at the home of the Scots and they flipped the script on the Eagles—180 degrees. In the first meeting on March 18 at EP, the Eagles won 6-1. The only Scots victory came at first doubles. But three of those victories for EP came in three sets at 1S, 3S, and 2D. The margins were only 1.54 at singles and 1.57 at doubles. A lot has changed in a month. HP has picked up steam. EP has rearraigned their lineup. The only hold over at singles was Vivian Nguyen at first singles. The only remaining doubles partnership is the Bernardy sisters at first doubles. The other two groups are new combinations.<\/p>\n

Today HP won all matches with the exception of third singles. Only one match went three sets and that was entered as a win for the Scots at second singles with Birtukuan Aregawi winning the first and third sets in the win over Thanvi Chada. The only extra point set came at fourth singles in the second set with Charlotte Bistodeau topping off at 22. The biggest improvement for HP came on the doubles side of the ledger moving up almost six points per set in doubles.<\/p>\n

#6 ranked HP evens their overall mark to 7-7 for the season. #4 EP is now 7-2 on the year.<\/p>\n

FIRST SINGLES <\/strong><\/p>\n

Nica Johnson got revenge for a three set loss at Eden Prairie on March 18 to Vivian Nguyen. In the first meeting Johnson had 34 winners, 9 more than Nguyen. The second meeting the gap was much larger with Johnson having 23 more than Ngyuen. Nguyen won the smashes then 8-4. Today Johnson led that category 7-5.<\/p>\n

Then Johnson\u2019s 28 errors also led and that was 8 more than Nguyen. Johnson cut her errors by ten to 18, but still it was eight more than Nguyen, just like March. And a day after a flawless serve game against Washington, Johnson\u2019s misfires ballooned to eight.<\/p>\n

But the key stat in this match was the side out game for Johnson. She suffocated Nguyen only allowing five points off her serve. Nguyen never had a run in either set. Johnson was not run crazy either with Nguyen limiting the Scot to three for the match. But Johnson was able to squeeze points off her service winning that battle 20-5. When it did come time to side out Johnson was able to accomplish that feat eleven times on the two stroke. Her most used winner in those situations was the soft drive four times. Nguyen had four two stroke winners on her side out with three smashes—all on Johnson\u2019s short serve. Winning the two stroke winners 11-4 indicates that the EP serve was not that challenging enough.<\/p>\n

As for game flow Johnson got the early lead in the first set on the first point, a five stroke smash and then picked up her first of two runs in that set on service five to make it 9-5 and then again on service eight, but a four point surge to take her out to 15-10. In that last run two were via aces, one deep, one short.<\/p>\n

In set two Johnson had the first and only run on her second service to bring her to a 4-2 lead. The rest of the way Johnson was able to get at least one point on service seven of the ten cracks at serving. Nguyen was bottled up with Johnson getting eight straight side outs, five on the two stroke.<\/p>\n
