4 games ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE TOURNAMENT, Saturday 10.7.2017<\/strong><\/p>\n

Conventional wisdom says smaller class teams bow to larger<\/p>\n

schools. That wasn\u2019t the case in the four games I charted on Saturday at the St. Michael-Albertville tournament. AAA teams went down to smaller schools in all four games. It should be pointed out that all four times the smaller school was ranked. Three times the AAA teams were not. The only exception was #5AAA Stillwater who fell to #1AA Maple Lake in the semis. That was the last game I charted due to my schedule the rest of the day.<\/p>\n

In the four games charted today I knocked off six new teams—three of which were in the top 30. I have miles to go to get to the top 20. The top 40 will be like climbing Mount Everest at this point.<\/p>\n

WADENA-DEER CREEK 2, CHANHASSEN 1<\/strong>
\n(25-19, 23-25, 15-9)<\/strong><\/p>\n

I opened action in the 9-16 bracket with #6A Wadena-Deer Creek (2010 State AA champion) going the distance against Chanhassen. This was the only match of the day I charted to go three sets. It was also the only match of the day to feature a player with more than 20 points: WDC\u2019s Casey Volkmann who knocked down 21 kills, 10 of which came in the second set which the Wolverines lost.<\/p>\n

#1AA Maple Lake took two from Elk River in the 1-8 quarterfinals. The Elks inched forward at 19-18 in the first set, but a four point run by the Irish gave them the breathing space for the first set win. Linsey Rachel ended up with six kills in this set including the set clincher. The ML defense only allowed nine earned ER points in the second set as the Irish jumped out of the gates up 11-2. Brynn Paumen was at the service line in the midst of that eight point outburst. ER had to burn both time outs in that run with the second turning the trick. It looked like ER might get traction with a 5-1 run (12-7) but ML basically slammed the door with another mega 8-1 run (20-8).<\/p>\n

Next on the docket was another team from the Northwest Suburban—Andover. This time it was smaller school #5AA SW Christian out of Chaska that swept the Huskies. This game fell on the 13-16 side of the bracket since both teams opened with a loss at 9:30. The first set saw SWC squeezing points off each of their first five services and also getting three runs in. Andover too was getting a few runs in during that sequence. Andover had used all their time outs when SWC reached 20-13. The second set was tighter with the Huskies\u2019 last lead at 15-14 and last tie at 18. The last SWC run of the day gave the Stars a 21-18 advantage. A double contact call gave Andover some hope and forced a SWC time out at 24-23. That did the trick as Mackenzie Close finished off the match with a kill on the first swing, her fifth first swing kill of the day.<\/p>\n

#1AA Maple Lake made it four straight for the small schools with a sweep over #5AAA Stillwater in the championship semifinals. The defending state champs had to climb out of deficits at the start of each set, but by the time the tenth point rolled around the Irish were in control. The key run in the first set was a five point bump for ML after a missed Stillwater serve. Stillwater used a three point surge down the stretch which forced a ML time out. A push kill by Linsey Rachel followed by a block by Rachel sealed the first set win. Thing moved ML\u2019s way in the second set with a seven point mega run. Just like in the quarters with ER, Stillwater had to burn both time outs to stop the bleeding at 17-9. After a pair of side outs it was the Ponies turn to run. They came up with five to cut the deficit to 18-15 and ML spent a time out without stopping the slide. Nine times in the second set ML scored on the first side out swing. That contrasted with five for Stillwater. I have also included the serve receive points won and lost for each receiver. Rachel proved to be effective, not only on her swings, but also igniting the attack with a Receive to win mark of .833.<\/p>\n
