After three weekends in the

metro with mega-events, (St. Thomas Thanksgiving, Breakdown Hopkins; Breakdown Minnetonka) I headed south to Rochester for another multiple game extravaganza. This time the action was between two conferences—the Hiawatha Valley League vs the Three Rivers Conference. The action started at 9 am at the Mayo Civic Center in Rochester and I was able to chart three full games, plus two halves. In between I went to JM for a non conference AAAA contest.

So what did we learn today?

The Hiawatha Valley (this year) is better than the Three Rivers….at least on the girls’ side. In the seven contests the HVL won all seven (the other games I didn’t chart included wins by Pine Island and Hayfield).

Sometimes a player can outscore (almost) a team. 22 was the lucky number as Tatum Pickar of Cannon Falls and Lyndsey Quam of Zumbrota-Mazeppa each had 22, one less than their opponent. Of course Quam had the second half left to play when I departed.

The pp100 window was 109.4 to 34.3 today. But if we just look at full games the window on the high end drops to 80.7.

8 is enough—-Eighth graders are making a big impact. Two schools had heavy minute rotation for a pair of eighth graders. Rochester JM’s Lillian Meister and Katherine Hurt plus Lake City’s Natalie Bremer and Mya Shones led categories for their team. Bremer had the best distribution mark with nine in the win over Southland. She was 90% on her set up passes.

Is it defense? Or just bad offense? Lauren Oyalo of Edina read JM’s passes and just when the Rockets thought they were going to make a move closing the deficit to five (38-33), Oyalo snatched one of her game high six steals and scored the lay up to restore a deeper cushion with under four minutes to go.

There was only one real comeback in the games I charted—–#2A Goodhue trailed #12AA Caledonia 36-29 with 11:40 left after a Heidi Bolduan 3. Goodhue has rallied in other big games on that court and finished with a 21-5 kick. The Wildcats took the lead for good on a pair of free throws from Lexi Lodermeier. Goodhue ramped up their production with five straight scores. Caledonia was mired in a seven minute drought.

CANNON FALLS 33, FILLMORE CENTRAL 23

ZUMBROTA-MAZEPPA 37, CHATFIELD 23—-HALF

EDINA 46, ROCHESTER JM 38

ROCHESTER LOURDES 35, LACRESCENT 15—–HALF

LAKE CITY 67, SOUTHLAND 34

GOODHUE 50, CALEDONIA 41

Team

PP100

scorer

Distributor

D stops

Cannon Falls

49.3

Tatum Pickar 22

Belle Freeberg 4

Two with 12

Fillmore Central

34.3

Three with 6

Emma Breitsprecher 3

Emma Breitsprecher 9

Zumbrota-Mazeppa*

97.4

Lyndsey Quam 22

Hannah Mensink 5

Makayla Arendt 5

Chatfield*

63.9

Belle Berg 9

Two with 3

Three with 4

Edina

80.7

Macy Nilsen 14

Olivia Coughlin 4

Lauren Oyalo 9

Rochester JM

66.7

Lillian Meister 9

Jessica Ruden 5

Lillian Meister 10

Rochester Lourdes*

109.4

Wynter Bergner 9

Jordan Berg 4

Caroline Adamson 5

LaCrescent*

46.9

Jada Reider 5

Two with 2

Two with 3

Lake City

94.4

Two with 15

Natalie Bremer 9

Mya Shones 10

Southland

48.6

McKendry Kennedy 18

Larissa Goslee 5

Two with 7

Goodhue

79.4

Two with 15

Emily Benrud 5

Emily Benrud 10

Caledonia

65.1

Katie Tornstrom 11

Ashley Schroeder 5

Katie Tornstrom 8

TRENCH PLAYERS:

Game 1: Tatum Pickar, Cannon Falls

Game 2: Lyndsey Quam, Zumbrota-Mazeppa

Game 3: Macy Nilsen, Edina

Game 4: Caroline Anderson, Rochester Lourdes (out of many possibilities)

Game 5: Natalie Bremer, Lake City

Game 6: Sydney Lodermeier, Goodhue

5 HVL V 3R GAMES +1 MORE Another Saturday, another mega-event.
