That team turned out to be Trinity with a 6-1 over host Hiawatha Collegiate. Trinity had the advantage in that this was their fourth match of the year; it was opening day for HC. The second year Wolves have upped their roster from eleven to 28. The gym at HC is colored lime green (kind of like the Timberwolves current uniform) and purple. Since the gym houses one basketball court, the badminton courts number three. That backs up the contests. The advantage is at HC the bleachers were extended and the crowd filled it with both parents and students.

The match itself featured three contests that were decided by a set at two points or less. The tightest contest came at first doubles where the Trinity duo of Kate Hodgdon and Anna Meyer won both sets 21-19. First and second singles also had sets decided by two points.

Besides the nature of the first match victory, another draw to this contest was this was my first time attending any contest at Hiawatha Collegiate. Last year I charted them on the road. This is their last year at the former Northrop school site. Next year they move into a facility near the Midtown Greenway next to Bracket Park and the Sullivan school.

Trinity is now officially 2-2 on the year.

SINGLES
1. Lotti’s ability to score off her serve provided enough momentum for the win. Lotti had a nine point advantage on service points. Both players were close in side out percentage. Lotti was able to generate more runs and that proved to be a difference maker. Lotti also delivered more winners with the clear dropping for nine points. Both players showcased long rallies with 33 of the 75 potential points lasting longer than five strokes (44% of the entire total). Marathon points at nine strokes or longer accounted for 12% of the match total. In both cases Lotti had the advantage.

In the first set Lotti got out to an early 8-2 lead thanks to runs of four and three. After holding Galvan scoreless on her first three serves, the HC soph broke through for a 5-1 sequence to cut the deficit to 11-8. Lotti strung together a six point run with the last four all going over five strokes.

The second set was much tighter throughout with the biggest separation at any time two points. Galvan led 19-17 after a five stroke smash before Lotti rallied to close the match with the final four points with a five stroke smash sealing the win.

Category

LOTTI

GALVAN

Side out

11/20-.550

12/22-.545

3+ Runs

6

2

Longest point string

6

3

Service points

22

13

Overall points

42

33

Points after 11

20

15

Points after own errors

7

8

Strokes

223

147

Strokes per point

5.310

4.455

5+ rallies

20

13

2- rallies

6

12

WINNERS

21

14

Aces

1

0

Blocks

0

0

Clears

9

3

Drives

6

4

Drops

0

1

Soft drives

0

2

Smashes

5

4

ERRORS

17

21

Deep

1

1

Fan

1

2

Net

3

12

Wide

5

5

Serve

7

1

W:E Ratio

1.236

0.667

Margin

4.50

Set Point %

2/2-1.000

Time

16:16.45

TRINITY 6, HIAWATHA COLLEGIATE 1 Going into this match one team was going to pick up their first team

[2,5
State Tournament Week begins with team action at eight different sites.
