In three sets Johnson held the Hawks to five or less. The Hawks featured a singles’ line up with three freshmen.

Humboldt is undergoing renovations and additions to their building. Yang racked up 26 winners of which 14 ended as clears. The 14 clears were more than the nine winners Lay provided. Lay did squeeze points off her serve seven times, forcing Yang to under .500 in side out percentage.

In both sets Lay held a brief early lead. In set one her advantage was 2-1 before Yang ran off four different types of winners. On Yang’s next service she added another run of five to make it 10-4. Lay’s only run of the match came on her fourth service, cutting the margin to 10-7. Four straight Yang services were fueled by runs. The clear provided the Yang with the most winners, but Yang also made use of the drops, usually placed in the left front corner, stretching the court and making Lay cover ground. In the second set Lay started with the first two points, but then Yang painted the right back corner with four clears opening up a run of six. Yang’s first seven winners (up to point nine) came on clears. The drops that held equal importance in the first set fell to one. Inevitably the match ended on a three stroke clear to the right back.

Category

YANG

LAY

Side out

6/13-.462

3/14-.214

3+ Runs

6

1

Longest point string

7

3

Service points

29

8

Overall points

42

21

Points after 11

20

8

Points after own errors

6

3

Strokes

156

85

Strokes per point

3.714

4.250

5+ rallies

13

8

2- rallies

10

5

WINNERS

26

9

Aces

2

1

Blocks

0

1

Clears

14

1

Drives

0

0

Drops

5

5

Soft drives

2

1

Smashes

3

1

ERRORS

8

16

Deep

1

0

Net

3

9

Wide

6

6

Serve

1

1

W:E Ratio

3.250

0.563

Margin

10.5

Set Point %

2/2

Time

12:32.50

[2,5
Johnson won their eleventh state team badminton title with two 6-1 wins over Burnsville in the semis, and then Humboldt in the title match Thursday afternoon.
