Southwest provided both finalists in the singles field with #1 seed Lily Landis outlasting her teammate Emily Jenewin 21-15, 21-15. Jenewin, the second singles for the Lakers, upended #2 seed Bella Kantharak in the quarters.

On the doubles side it was the #2 seed of Darla Dennis & Nisa Khairunisa outlasting the Henry first doubles team of Lucy Xiong & Cynthia Lee 22-20, 18-21, 21-13. Xiong and Lee took down #1 seed Camryn & Alysa of Southwest in the semifinals. This was the first win at doubles for the Tigers in over 12 years.

One interesting tidbit: half the singles quarterfinals were second singles. The bottom bracket had three of the four. The same thing happened in the bottom bracket in doubles.

SINGLES

FIRST ROUND
Julianna, Roosevelt def Al, North 21-6, 21-7

Penelope, Washburn def Sagal, Edison 21-7, 21-17

Derartu, South def Julie, Henry 21-14, 21-18

Alice, Roosevelt def Der, Edison 22-20, 21-10

Sarah, Henry def Tati, North 21-19, 21-7

Emily, Southwest def Emma, South 21-14, 21-19

QUARTERFINALS

#1 Lily, Southwest def Julianna, Roosevelt 21-7, 21-9

Penelope, Washburn def Derartu, South 21-17, 11-21, 21-18

Sarah, Henry def Alice, Roosevelt 23-21, 19-21, 21-12

Emily, Southwest def #2 Bella, South 21-14, 21-11

SEMIFINALS

#1 Lily, Southwest def Penelope, Washburn 21-10, 21-12

Emily, Southwest def Sarah, Henry 21-10, 21-18

CHAMPIONSHIP

#1 Lily, Southwest def Emily, Southwest 21-15, 21-15

3RD

Penelope, Washburn def Sarah, Henry 21-15, 21-15

5TH

Derartu, South

#2 Bella, South

DOUBLES

FIRST ROUND

Anna/Samantha, Washburn def Amaya/Khadija, North 21-9, 21-17

Lucy/Cynthia, Henry def Jane/Ceca, South 21-15, 21-10

Pakou/Delila, Edison def Sarena/Jakie, Roosevelt 21-12, 21-10

Raina/Clare, Washburn def Marli/Shay, North 21-15, 21-15

Hlou/SaiNancy, Edison def Najma/Redwan, Roosevelt 21-16, 21-8

Paige/Zoe, Southwest def Phang/Betty, Henry 21-14, 21-18

QUARTERFINALS

#1 Camyrn/Alysa, Southwest def Anna/Samantha, Washburn 21-8, 21-10

Lucy/Cynthia, Henry def Pakou/Delila, Edison 21-18, 19-21, 21-18

Raina/Clare, Washburn def Hlou/SaiNancy, Edison 21-6, 21-6

#2 Nisa/Darla, South def Paige/Zoe, Southwest 21-14, 21-15

SEMIFINALS

Lucy/Cynthia, Henry def #1 Camyrn/Alysa, Southwest 21-19, 21-18

#2 Nisa/Darla, South def Raina/Clare, Washburn 21-18, 19-21, 21-17

CHAMPIONSHIP

#2 Nisa/Darla, South def Lucy/Cynthia, Henry

3RD

#1 Camyrn/Alysa, Southwest def Raina/Clare, Washburn

5TH

Paige/Zoe, Southwest & Anna/Samantha, Washburn

SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP

It was an all Southwest battle for the title in 2017 with #1 seed Lily Landis battling teammate Emily Jenewin.

Surprise was not an issue. Both players were equal when it came to winners. Jenewin had more smashes at 7; Landis landed more clears with 5. The differential came on errors. Landis benefited from 23 Jenewin errors, which turned out to be a +9 when all was added. Jenewin was going to the back line often in the first set. The problem was seven birds went too far.

Landis broke open the first set with six straight to take a 12-7 lead. Drops accounted for the first two points in the run. In the second set Jenewin led 7-6 after a run of five. Included in that sequence were two aces. Landis didn’t really get separation until a run of four to make it 19-14. Both players traded side outs after that.

This is Southwest’s four singles champion since 2010. Lisa Yin won that year. Sophie Breen in 2013 and Eva Streitz in 2015 round out the Laker quartet of champions.

Category

LANDIS

JENEWIN

Side out

10/18-.556

6/18-.333

3+ Runs

6

3

Longest point string

6

5

Service points

23

10

Overall points

42

30

Points after 11

20

18

WINNERS

17

17

Aces

2

2

Blocks

1

0

Clears

5

3

Drives

2

1

Drops

2

3

Soft drives

2

1

Smashes

3

7

ERRORS

14

23

Deep

2

8

Net

5

7

Wide

5

6

Serve

2

2

W:E Ratio

1.214

0.739

Margin

6.000

Set Point %

2/3-.667

Time

13:12.67

MINNEAPOLIS CITY CHAMPIONSHIPS Minneapolis held their individual tournament in a one day format

[5
POLL #7 1 Johnson 2 Washington 3 Harding 4 Eden Prairie 5 Como 6 Central 7 Humboldt 8 Highland 9 Burnsville 10 Kennedy 11 Edina 12 Hmong Academy 13 Southwest 14 South 15 Washburn 16 Henry 17 Community of Peace 18 Prairie Seeds 19 Edison 20 Roosevelt 21 Math & Science…
It was a busy day for conference tournaments today.
