In the first meeting this year the Governors won 7-0. Back on March 26 three of the matches went to three sets with Johnson winning all of them. The Governors did the same thing today. But the Eagles did get a victory at third singles. Despite what looks like a convincing win, the game was much tighter. The average Johnson victory margin in singles was 2.1, in doubles it was 4.1. Yesterday the margins were 7 and 11 against Eden Prairie and 9.75 and 4 against Edina. Four contests were decided by three points or less. A change of 9 points (2 points at second singles, 3 points at fourth singles, 4 points at second doubles) would have resulted in a 4-3 win for Washington.

I have now added charts to the tail end of this report. It shows the flow of the game, when and who had the lead.

SINGLES
1. Nou Chee Yang, J def Be Be Say 21-10, 21-17
2. On March 26 Say won the second set 21-19. Yang closed down the side out game at close to 79% and dominated the winners 28-6. Yang showcased a balanced attack with six categories scoring between four and six points. Yesterday there was a problem with the count and again today there were issues. In both cases today Yang’s final score should really read 22. In set one Yang scored on her first four services with runs on service one and three. The second run (seven) set the tone for the match (12-3) the highlight of which was the final point of the run on a nine stroke drop. Say, after the first point, never led and she never was able to get two points in a row.

In the second frame Say got the first run (all on hitting errors) to lead 4-1. A second say run (again all on errors) gave her a 7-4 lead. Yang didn’t pull in front until a five point run capped by a three stroke smash (12-9). Say had one last run of three cutting the margin to 16-15 (all three points errors). Five straight side outs ended when on Yang’s serve, she scored on a twelve stroke hitting error by Say. That was the second point in a four point run.

Category

YANG

<td
