All four singles matches went the distance. With the Lakers sweeping the doubles in two, they needed a win and got it at third singles when Haley Dunham won the third set. Dunham also was the only player to win after losing the first set. A change of three points would have tipped the scales to the Millers. Of the twelve sets in singles, four were decided by three points or less and all four ended up on the Lakers side of the ledger. Southwest also won the two extra point sets at fourth singles, second set and first set in second doubles.

SINGLES
1. This was a comparison in contrasts. Onsrud put together her win with the endurance of a long distance runner. She won 23 five stroke or more rallies, three of which went to double digits. Murphy had half her points through two strokes or less. Onsrud tripled Murphy’s totals in winners (36-12) as her smash total equaled Murphy’s winners. The other facet of this game had Murphy working on her short serve at 55%.

Onsrud took the lead at 5-4 after a run of three. On her next service she tacked on four more for a 10-5 lead. She tapped into another run on her next service for a 14-7 advantage. Murphy didn’t get her first run until trailing 16-9 and then the four point boost came via errors. That was her only run in the set. Onsrud out earned Murphy 13-4 in set one.

Murphy didn’t waste time establishing her game in set two with the first three points. Onsrud pulled in front on her first run 6-5. At this point the side out game vacated Onsrud. Murphy went on a 7-1 spree over the next two services to lead 12-7. Onsrud closed the gap with her third run of three to 20-19, but a missed serve handed the game to Murphy. Onsrud again led in winners 15-5.

This time Onsrud started off with the first three points. She wouldn’t trail in this set. The side out game came home once again for Onsrud as she stopped Murphy seven of ten times. Neither player came up with a lot of winners in this set. Combined they both totaled eleven. But when Onsrud connected it was heavy on the smash with six of her eight winners in this manner One interesting stat is that Onsrud stopped her own serve four times in a row. It didn’t slow down the march to the win as she sat at 19-10 after the fourth miss.

Category

<td
