Badminton Out & About: North vs. Southwest 4.18.2024

NORTH 5, SOUTHWEST 2

My out & about drought is over. It was a directional day in Minneapolis and North traveled to Southwest and dunked the Lakers 5-2 on their own court. The Polars split the singles and swept the doubles to put together their victory. The margins were extremely tight in singles with the average spread less than a point per set. Every set in the second singles match up, which was the last to finish, was 21-18. The first doubles also went three sets. In both cases Southwest grabbed the first set victory necessitating two straight wins for North. The second set at third singles went to Carla from Southwest at 25-23. The second set at third doubles also went to extra points which was claimed by the North pair of Duachi and Illy 24-22. The only real comfortable spread came in the fourth singles win by North’s Toni with double digit margins in each set.

FIRST SINGLES

HANNE 2, ASIAH 0 (21-19, 21-14)

Hanne of Southwest provided the Lakers with one of their two points today with a sweep of Asiah. Hanne rallied from an eight-point deficit (15-7) in the first set and saw a nine-point lead in the second (12-3) evaporate to a twelve all tie before finishing with a 9-2 kick.

The side out game was not significant in this match up. Hanne was better but did not finish above .500. Hanne had the advantage in winners 27-12 with the drive favored with a dozen. It was interesting that the even stroke winners were almost non-existent. Most of the time when there was a change of service it was an odd stroke error that gave the bird back to the opponent.

You might notice the point totals for Hanne were one off. That is because I had the first set charted at 20-19. Asiah led 19-15 when a three-stroke shot sailed wide giving the bird back to Hanne. The final point by their tally was a marathon 16 stroke hitting error that went wide. That five-point run to end the first set helped fuel Hanne’s start in the second with six straight points.
