ABOUT LAST NIGHT…..QUARTET FROM MONTICELLO
Four games and eight new teams (that doesn’t happen that much at this time of year). The added benefit was four of the teams were from over an hour away, mainly from the northern reaches of the state. Knocked off were #26 Monticello, #32 Proctor, #53 Watertown-Mayer, #68, Little Falls, #101 Rock Ridge, #135 St. Anthony, #140 Zimmerman, #228 Grand Rapids. Proctor was the only ranked team in action, but Little Falls, Monticello and Rock Rapids have received votes in the top 10 polls this year.
The last day of 2025 featured three blowouts and a competitive grindfest. Only the Proctor v Little Falls matchup had drama. And a low score. The Rails trailed the point totals of Zimmerman and Rock Ridge and only bested Grand Rapids from the losers of the other three games.
Some numbers that forced me to rub my eyes to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating were the Magic overwhelmingly dominant on the defensive glass gathering 30 defensive boards to only two offensive for the Wolverines of Rock Ridge. Translation—Monticello owned the d glass at .938%. They were the only team with an offensive rebounding rate above 50% (18 of 34, .529). Free throw woes continue to plague teams. St. Anthony (despite the blow out win), Little Falls, Zimmerman were all 50% or less at the line. Watertown-Mayer and the hosts led with over 50% success on 2-point attempts. 3-point shooting was not a focus for most teams. The Flyers did take more, the only team that leaned in that direction. Turnovers continue to be a bane (and a pain). Proctor led with only one turnover for every 21 touches. However, GR, LF, and Zimmerman each averaged about ten touches per turnover.
The best game (from a writer’s point of view) was the Rails vs the Flyers and the 19th century mode of transportation was victorious. Possessions lasted long into the touch count. Everything was contested. You can thank Proctor for dictating the tempo and pressure. Neither team had much breathing room all day. Proctor did enjoy a 19-13 lead in the first half, but the Flyers scored the last six points of the half to tie it at the break. The Rails stretched the lead in the second half to five points (26-21). Yet LF continues to hang around thanks to the efforts of sophomore Malin Youngberg. She nailed a 3 to make it 36-33 with under three minutes left. That would be the end of the line for LF’s offense. A critical offensive foul on a screen negated Youngberg’s game tying 3 (to make it 36) with 1:45 to go. The next five LF trips were empty. Proctor’s Ellie Pease hit the 3 that gave them 36 which proved to be the difference in the game. That occurred around the 4:50 mark. Chloe Carlson tacked on four free throws on two of the last three Rail possessions.

There were seven players that made the 31 Club Wednesday with two cracking into the 41 Club. The only team that did not provide a member was Grand Rapids. I did some other indicators showing the value of these performances. Five of the players made the centurion level with the grinders Youngberg and Carlson missing out. But looking at % of their 31 Club score compared to total team points and they were vastly ahead of the field. Indeed, Youngberg was over 100%. On the possession front Greta Schumann of St. Anthony was close to 65%. The category range was from .648 to .419.
