FIRST SINGLES

ALLIE 2, YER 0

(reported 21-14, 21-7, recorded 21-14, 20-10)

Allie of North St. Paul gained steam as the match with Yer went on getting a two set victory by cutting the margins down in the second set. The usual suspects of Side Outs, runs, and winners all were big on the Allie board. Her side out percentage was .667; runs, 6-2 and winners 33-8. On the subject of winners—Allie shifted her strategy from first to second set. She relied on six drives and four clears in her 18 first set winners. In the second set she move to five soft drives and five smashes. In set one Allie scored the first run of three on her third service to create a 6-2 cushion. At the turn at 11 Yer closed the gap to 11-9, but on Allie’s next two services she had runs of four and three to put the first set out of reach. It took until Allie’s fifth service in the second set before she scored her first run to lead 9-4. Allie’s biggest run came her seventh service with six points including three straight soft drives. The day ended with two straight Allie smashes.

As has been the theme of late, the winner was generous with missed serves. Today Allie had five total, while Yer never missed. Another factoid from today was neither player was able to generate much two stroke winners. Yer had one, while Allie had two, both in the first set.

I have no idea why the second set score got off the rails from my tally—a difference of four points, some added (one for Allie) and some subtracted (three for Yer).

Allie is now 2-4 on the year. Yer, in her second match at first singles after starting the first two matches at third singles, is searching for her first victory of the year at 0-4.
