GBB Out & About: Rochester Mayo v Red Wing, 1.16.2018

ROCHESTER MAYO 53, RED WING 37

Rochester Mayo clipped #4AAA Red Wing in a Big 9 contest on

Tuesday evening. Just as made 3s were a big part of Sauk Centre’s Monday’s win (they cashed in 15 times), the arc was a big factor in the loss of RW tonight. The Wingers attempted 58.5% of their shots from behind the arc and only made four. That contrasted with the Spartans 10% attempt total from the deep end. The problem for RW was the shots weren’t falling early. With 2:30 left in the first half Mayo enjoyed a 20-6 lead. RW tried two time outs to change the trajectory of the game. The Wingers suffered through a 16 possession drought—–or translated into time—-ten and a half minutes of trekking across the Sahara without any water. Mayo’s 2/3 defense had active hands, keeping RW struggling to find the shot they desired. Mayo on offense was patient and deliberate (with plenty of bounce passes on the perimeter). In two point land the Spartans shot 50%. Inside Mayo attempted 24 shots. RW only tried 11. By half Mayo led 22-8. In the second half Mayo stretched their lead out to 43-20 at the widest (with 7:50 left). RW’s full court pressure defense started to deliver. They were able to administer their press because Mayo was piling up fouls and RW cashed in at the line 17 times. The Wingers won down the stretch 17-10, but their previous hole was too deep to escape.

Mayo held RW to their lowest point total of the year. Nine times RW has scored 60 or more points. The Wingers were averaging 64.7 points per game prior to tonight. Mayo, by contrast, reached their high score for the year (53 points) for the fourth time this year.

RW will be playing #3AAA Northfield on the road Thursday. They have one practice get their groove back from the outside. Mayo is now 7-7 on the year. RW falls to 11-2.

I now have four AAAA teams left to chart. I have seen 72 of the top 100.
