Badminton Out & About: Roosevelt vs. Edison 3.21.2024

ROOSEVELT 4, EDISON 3

Roosevelt picked up their first win of the year with a 4-3 victory on the road at Edison. This was the Teddies third match of the week, all with scores of 3-4 (Henry and North St. Paul). This was the opener for the Tommies. The singles contests had the narrowest margins at second and third, both of which went the distance to three sets. Roosevelt took the evens at singles, and added the first two doubles. The final fourth point in the win was actually cemented at fourth singles.

Other than the narrow wins at second and third singles the rest of the match was closer to double digit point spreads. All the doubles were decided by ten points or more.

FIRST SINGLES

Amelia Larson, Edison 2, Monce Palacios, Roosevelt 0 (23-6, 21-7)

Edison’s Amelia Larson, last year’s Minneapolis City singles runner-up, had a solid start to the 2024 season with a two set win over Monce Palacios. Larson had six straight side outs in the first set, not allowing Palacios any points on her serve. Larson also enjoyed long runs with the top mark 13 straight points to take command of the second set. She also established big margins in winners 33-6. Most of those winners for her came on odd strokes—meaning off her own serve. There was a little of everything in her winner category with clears leading the way with ten. Smashes were close behind with nine. Most of the set ups involved the left side of the court, but Larson finished 23 of her winners on the right side.

Larson opened the first set with the first seven points, the first six on winners. There was a two service stretch where Palacios forced two straight side outs on Larson’s fourth and fifth service. At some point the score got off the rails here with Larson adding an extra two points to the totals I had in the book.

The second set started off much tighter with Palacios tieing the game at two and closing the gap to 6-5 with her only run of the match, a four pointer. The rally on her next bird was halted by a ceiling replay. On the reserve she was wide and then Larson rattled off a dozen straight to put the game out of reach. In that run Larson had 10 winners, five of which were on the third stroke. Whereas in the first set Larson mixed the clears and drives for six winners each, the final set saw smashes rule with six including the final seven stroke smash to end the match.
