2024 Badminton Poll #6

We have two regular season weeks before state tournament week kicks off on May 13. Some conference races are to be determined in the upcoming week 7. Week 8 features the city conference singles and doubles championships. St. Paul’s is usually a good indicator of state titles.

A reminder to all teams to get your post-season team and individual status and your line-ups set and situated. Schools taking part in the team portion of the state tournament need to commit on May 1. Rosters need to be in on May 6. Team seeds will be released on May 8. The potential is 28 entries, but some schools may opt out.

Last week I brought out the camera to record the first doubles at the Burnsville Triangular with Edina and Highland Park. I have finished the coding, now I must tabulate the results and then publish or put them online. It is a labor-intensive process. What is different from the singles charting is I can pause, stop, rewind, and identify much more. Right now, I am looking at who is hitting the bird, what happened in the rally, and where the player is striking the bird. For example, I divide the contact point between the right and left of the body, and high (above the shoulder), mid (between shoulder and waist) and low (below waist). I probably can add a third layer the “middle” but chose to keep it relatively simple for now. I could add other items as well later. It took a while to get back into rhythm on this but now I should be able to knock out the doubles results much faster. The system is evolving and whatever questions I want answered I will alter my processes. Usually, I am curious about what leads to winning.

I am at 27 teams charted or 96.4% after Hiawatha Collegiate and Burnsville were charted. One remains: Fridley and they have not taken to the court yet.

This week there are a couple of triangulars: Eden Prairie hosts Edina and Central on Monday; the Hornets host Washington and Kennedy on Thursday. Head-to-head matches include singles #2 Tenzin Tsephel of Edina hosting #3 Kimberly Tobar and Harding on Wednesday. On the doubles front #1 Edina and #3 Washington take part of that triangular on Thursday. The day before #4 Harding sees the Hornets.
