UNDEFEATEDS MEET AT CENTRAL
Two undefeated teams met at St. Paul Central in week three. At the end of the day only Osseo remained undefeated. We probably need to put an asterisk by the name Osseo. This team is made up of players from two teams from the Minnesota Select program which is currently in the middle of their JO season. It would be an equivalent if the AAU basketball was going on at the same time as the high school season and a team decided to play. The MSHSL would definitely frown on that type of cross over. But the MSHSL is not running the boys side….. yet …..and, in the spirit of getting teams involved (22 teams), the Osseo*/Select team was born. They had no problems today in the win over previously unbeaten Hmong Academy. The Warriors had an iron five tonight as three of their eight varsity players were either injured or ill including Kongchi Chang (4.5 points per match), Alex Yang (4.5 points per match), and Elijah Yang. Even though Hmong Academy had more than enough players with their JV, the varsity soldiered on with five. In the first match against St. Paul Central, the neophytes in this grouping, they survived 25-7, 25-7. With five players, the sixth spot would be an automatic side out for the other team. It never got to that stage with the Minutemen.
Hmong Academy would need their missing players (and their combined nine points per set) against the fireworks that Osseo/Select brought. Leading the charge for the Orioles/Select is a foreign exchange student Miljan Kastratovic who is a member of the Montenegrin National Program. Kastratovic is taking classes at North St. Paul but has international experience playing in three European Cups. He isn’t the only one on the team with laser like jump serves and a power whip attack. Five players play on the 18-1 team, three others are on the 17-1 team. None of those players listed are from Osseo. The runs Hmong Academy are used to scoring against opponents were turned against them. In set one an eight point run put Select up 12-3 when HA took a time out. This came on Cameron Wresh’s service (from Champlin Park). HA got their only run of the game with four straight (13-8) but another avalanche of points, again eight off Luke Nelson’s service (Wayzata) put them at 21-8. With five players there are going to be holes. With an experienced team they will find those holes. Select earned 15 of the points in the first set. HA only earned four.
In set two HA actually held a 3-2 lead thanks to a rocket service error that was a tad outside the lines and then a hitting error. A missed serve by HA opened the door for four more points and Select didn’t look back. There were 17 earned points in this frame for Osseo/Select. HA showed a little more grit after being shell-shocked in round one with 10 earned points including five first swing side outs. The end of the match came when the service reverted to HA, but it was the missing sixth spot so an automatic side out was the result ending the match.
The numbers from the Hmong Academy v St. Paul Central and Osseo/Select games will go up tomorrow.
In the meantime here is a link to Kastratovic on the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV)
