GVB Out & About: Three Games from Hopkins

HOPKINS VOLLEYBALL INVITATIONAL
THREE 3 SET MATCHES

I was back on the trail Saturday for only my second out & about for the year. I started the day at the Concordia St. Paul Hall of Fame brunch prior to the Homecoming football game. The tie in? Jillian Kalvik was inducted, and I coached her when she was younger and also got her started in coaching when I began at Henry in volleyball. Kalvik is now the head coach at Washburn, and the Millers were at the Hopkins tournament without her. I didn’t chart them today and was able to get the pens out for three contests, all were three setters.

HOPKINS 2, EASTVIEW 1
(18-25, 25-20, 15-13)

This was a semifinal in the top division on court 1 and the hosts rallied after falling in the first set to zap the Lightning. The first four times Eastview served the ball they were able to squeeze points while getting Hopkins out quickly on the first ball three of four times. A six point run solidified Eastview’s hold in the first set (18-8). Anna Erickson delivered seven kills in that set alone, but a ten point deficit was too steep.

Eastview suffered self-inflicted wounds in the second set, stopping their serve on three of their first five attempts at the line. That opening allowed Hopkins to build a 10-5 lead. The Lightning spent both time outs by the time it was 17-10. Hopkins is one of the younger teams out there with coach Vicki Swenson’s twin seventh grade daughters Stella (the setter) and Olivia (the outside hitter) both on the court. When Erickson moves to the back row, that helps the opponents. Eastview enjoyed a 8-1 run with the senior away from the net. After a Royal time out, Erickson, out the back row with a kill, ended the threat and was back in front.

There were six lead changes in the final frame. A 7-1 Hopkins run turned a one point deficit to a standing on the verge at 14-9. The Lightning held off match point four times before Erickson ended the match with her 17th kill.

MAPLE GROVE 2, ST. LOUIS PARK 1
(25-22, 20-25, 15-7)

Next up on court 1 was Maple Grove and St. Louis Park in a lower round final. The week before I saw, but did not chart, the Crimson when they faced Minneapolis Southwest. This week MG got the benefit of the pen. They went up against a tall, young Oriole team from St. Louis Park. StLP has a touch of Minneapolis in the roster. At one point Kendall Coley was at Washburn and Gabby McCaa was at Southwest until this season. McCaa was the leading scorer in this contest with 14 points, but the Crimson used balance, a strong serving game, plus a strong blocking scheme to knock off the Os. Oddly enough StLP outearned MG 41-35. Where StLP suffered came on an abundance of errors (25-13)

MG took control on the sixth lead change in set one during a four point run (14-11). StLP tied it at 18 with their own run of four. After an MG time out, Megan Liu came up with a kill to stop the run. Both teams traded four straight first swing time outs with MG maintaining the two point edge. A double contact call ended the first set. It looked like MG was going to have smooth sailing in the second with the first five points. The Orioles were forced to use a time out at that point, and that helped restore some energy for the birds. The biggest run of the day came with an eleven point surge when Annie Holden stepped to the service line. In the run she had three aces and Kendall Coley came up with a pair of blocks. McCaa knocked down the final three points for StLP with two straight side out kills and then one in transition.

Mistakes plagued StLP at the start of the final frame with MG picking up six of their first nine points on gifts. You could push that to eight with a block (hitting error) and overpass kill (passing error). MG pushed their advantage to eight points (11-3) and just required four side outs for the win. They held StLP to one point on service in the third set. The Crimson’s final point came on a hitting error.

ROSEVILLE 2, HOPKINS 1
(22-25, 25-22, 15-8)

Roseville spoiled host Hopkins’ championship plans with a three set win. The Raiders got off to a slow start in the first set and required a time out trailing 6-2. The helped jump start Roseville as they scored off serve the next five times at the line and moved in front at 13-11. Erickson, as she did in the semis, helped stabilize the situation for Hopkins with two straight kills and then her block put Hopkins back in front 15-14. Roseville had one last lead after a missed serve and hitting error, but Erickson ignited a 6-1 run and forced Roseville to burn time out number two. That time out shifted the momentum back to the Raiders and then closed to 23-22. A double contact stopped the surge and Erickson finished off the set with a tip kill.

Hopkins enjoyed the first run of the second set and led 6-4. But when Erickson moved to the back in this set, Roseville feasted. They went on a 9-3 run, and even after moving to the front Roseville kept the pressure on with another quick surge of four for an overall 13-4 run. A seven point advantage doesn’t last long these days. Hopkins righted the ship and charged back with a 6-1 push to close the gap to 18-16. Roseville utilized a three point run to create an insurance cushion at 22-17. Hopkins’ Chudear Tut from the right side came up with two straight kills and that got  5-1 Hopkins run that forced Roseville to take a time out clinging to a 23-22 lead. Jayda Johnston got the side out after Roseville straightened out their receiving game. A hitting error even the match at one set each.

The Raiders ran wild out of the gate to start the third set with two runs sandwiched around one lone Erickson kill (8-1). The Hopkins receiving game was rattled and delivered overpasses and one ace in the buildup. The lone Hopkins run came directly after with three points. But the hosts could not get closer than four points the rest of the way. Eriel Carr wrapped up the day with two straight kills.
