MN GBB: A Look at 3AAAA

Since I have some time today and my class load is light at the

moment I took a look at the 3AAAA teams I have charted so far this year. It is the first section to be completed.

Last year the AAAA champion came from this section. Eastview is the favorite and has been the favorite in the section for the past seven years. The last team to win 3AAAA not named Eastview? Lakeville North, but they now reside in 1AAAA. The last team, currently in the section, to win the title not named Eastview? That school doesn’t exist. Prior to that St. Paul Central and Woodbury represented 3AAAA. Both are now in 4AAAA.

So how do these teams stack up compared to the recent past? Is basketball getting better in 3AAAA?

3AAAA PP100 PP100*
2019 79.23 75.52
2018 93.91 86.15
2017 94.15 90.49
2016 83.49 79.34
2015 86.77 78.88

Included is a graph to visually show the decline.

2019 is the lowest of the last five years (when the 2019 class was 8th graders). The 2017 class topped the charts, but since then there has been a steep drop of 14.92 points (Columbus anyone?). This holds true for both pp100 with and without Eastview.

Here is how 3AAAA stacks up with various splits.

Clearly the South Suburban is the power conference a good 23 higher than the next level.

The Average age of a starters is just a tad older than a junior. The seniors have the best pp100 at 95.8. The Sophomores are next.

The average height of a starter is 5-9. The weird stat of the day is the pp100 of the sub 5-6 players: they have the best pp100 at 97.9 but are a collective 0-5. It could be that the sub 5-6ers don’t have that many possessions. That is indicated in the 31 Club average of 16.6 which is better than the group above slightly.

Not too fast, not too slow. The Goldilocks “just right” pace seems to hover between 57 and 63 possessions.
