GBB Out & About: Providence v Edina 1.16.2019

PROVIDENCE 48, EDINA 44

Providence edged host Edina in a Wednesday night non conference

game 48-44. Hailey Hohenecker struck from behind the arc to put the Lions in the lead with five minutes left in the game 41-39. On a 38 touch possession Hohenecker hit her second 3 which spread the margin to a safer 44-39 advantage (the largest Providence lead of the night). Two Edina possessions later Lauren Oyalo nailed her own three cutting the margin to two (44-42). Maggie Murphy pushed the Lions’ lead up to four on a drive to the rim. Time was dwindling away for the hosts. With one minute & seven seconds to go Oyalo forced a turnover. Her drive down the middle again sliced the deficit to two with 46.4 seconds left. Edina immediately called a time out. Macy Nilsen swatted a chip shot away, but the ball remained with Providence with 38.6 to go. A missed shot led to an Edina turnover, but traveling was called as balance was lost. Maria Counts scored the last points of the night. An attempt to draw a foul on a 3 pointer missed on both counts and Providence celebrated their ninth win on the year (9-5). Edina fell to 7-9.

The one-two punch of Macy Nilsen and Lauren Oyalo combined for 41 of the Edina points (93%).  Both also were members of the 31 Club. No one else even made the 11 Club for the green. Providence was able to spread the scoring around better. Six Lions scored and three made it to double digit land. In the end it was Providence’s 3 point ability highlighted by eight connections that trumped the Hornets’ five.

Another factor was the pace for Providence. The Lions had 198 more touches with fewer chances (66-69). They averaged 7.55 touches for every play. Edina’s totals was 4.64. Both teams had 55 possessions.

This wraps up my charting for the Lake Conference. I also have all the Suburban East teams on file. This leaves 10 AAAA teams left on the menu.
