GBB Out & About: Cristo Rey Jesuit v Eagle Ridge Academy/International School of MN

CRISTO REY JESUIT 82, EAGLE RIDGE ACADEMY/INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF MN 38

Wednesday nights feature few games, usually with smaller metro

schools in the mix. That was the case tonight, but the numbers were not small at all. Cristo Rey Jesuit, a school based in south Minneapolis put running time on Eagle Ridge Academy/International School of Minnesota. Two factors went into the big numbers. CRJ connected on 14 3s. With ERA/ISM playing 2/3 zone there were plenty of openings for the Pumas. CRJ was actually the best behind the arc with 40% falling to 32% in 2s and even less at the free throw line (26%). Four players had three or more 3s, and all four shot 37.5% or better from long distance. The other big number was the turnover count and differential. CRJ forced 45 turnovers with their relentless full court pressure throughout the night.

The players on these schools are not well publicized. But CRJ has a force. Kya Phillips racked up 36 points and made, not the 31 Club, or the 41 Club, but the 51 Club with 58, the highest total of the year. The 5-10 senior forward scored in transition, post ups and also took part in the fireworks behind the arc making two. She had a triple double on the night with her points, 11 steals and 10 boards. Phillips won the 400 in the state track meet as a sophomore and will probably pursue that option collegiately after high school at the D1 level.

The rest of the Puma crew is younger. Madelyn Nolen, a sophomore, delivered a team high five 3s. Speaking of young, the top scorer for ERA/ISM was freshman Delaney Willcock.

This was the highest scoring game for CRJ this season.

Tonight, was an opportunity to get to Eagle Ridge Academy for the first time. The physical school is located west of 169 off Bren road in Minnetonka. The mascot for ERA is the Gryphons, another singular symbol in Minnesota schools like the Pumas. CRJ is 11-5. ERA is at least 2-9.
