GBB Out & About: New Life Academy vs CHOF 2.25.2019

NEW LIFE ACADEMY 56, CHOF 50

Once again my plans did not coincide with Mother Nature. I was to

have been in Rochester for the 1AA quarterfinals. Nope. The wind and snow conspired to keep me closer to home. Looking through the available games the highest team left was CHOF. They were playing a regular season make up game with New Life Academy. So, my last regular season game was tonight. New Life had a lead as big as 16 points in the first half thanks to sharpshooting. The Eagles nailed five 3s and shot 45% from behind the arc in the first half. They also had the eye from 2s with 53%. The Eagles also celebrated 1000 points from junior Carly Hager whose 3 at the 5:10 mark in the first half made the score 27-15. At the break NLA was up 34-22.

Whatever was said at half time in the CHOF locker room it inspired the host Lions to a 16-1 start to the second half. CHOF used the one two punch of Ari Geerdes (25 points) and Amari Piepkorn (23) to storm back into the contest. Both players not only did the heavy lifting on offense, but they were instrumental in the comeback rally. Both reached the 41 Club level. The rest of the Lions did not provide much lift. Only one other player scored, that was on a lay up capping the 16-1 run. The rest of the squad was a collective 1/13 from the floor. The collective pp100 of the group was an anemic 8 pp100. That contrasted with the NLA supporting players. Separating out the top two scorers the rest of the Eagles scored 19 points, with three 3s in the mix.

The widest CHOF lead came at 40-36. The Lions went to the bench and NLA reserve Kaitlyn Groeneweg hit a 3 from up top to close the gap to 40-39. Then the pressure was dialed up to 11. Two quick turnovers resulted in a quick time out and a resetting of the table. But the momentum had shifted back to the guests. Another Groeneweg 3 gave NLA a 44-40 advantage. The game was tied at 46 for five possessions. McKayla Montgomery broke the tie with a dish from Emmy Erickson. Hager added a 3 on the next NLA possession and CHOF was forced to call time again at 3:35 down 51-46. In the next six CHOF possessions, three ended up as turnovers. Hager added her fourth 3 with a little over two minutes remaining and that gave NLA a six point lead, which they would maintain the rest of the way.

CHOF heads to sections with a 12-10 mark. NLA raises it’s mark to 15-11.
