Badminton Out & About: Hmong Academy v Community of Peace 3.28.2019

HMONG ACADEMY 5, COMMUNITY OF PEACE 2

Hmong Academy has a new gym this season after a year of being homeless. Today the Warriors hosted their rivals from the Twin Cities Athletic Conference and another St. Paul charter school the Community of Peace Tigers. The hosts swept the doubles and took the last two singles to beat CoP 5-2. Two matches went the three set distance with each side splitting. Lor See Lor of CoP rallied from a first set loss to win her match at second singles. HA’s Julia Vang and Faxia Xiong won the first and third sets in their win in third doubles. A night and day differential came at second doubles where Shylene Lee and Isabelle Her escaped the first set with an extra point win 23-21, but then put the pedal to the metal in the second set allowing only a solitary point.

This is new coach week. Tuesday it was North, today was CoP. Quinn Anderson took over for Waihon Liew.

FIRST SINGLES

(21-17*, 21-14) *ended by my charts at 19-16

In the battle of the Yangs, the first singles went to Mai Lee (MLY) of Community of Peace over Pa Zong (PZY). MLY won despite straying wide on her services six times. MLY opened the match with two straight three stroke smashes before the service errors intruded. PZY’s first three points came on the first stroke with two coming on service errors and one on an ace. MLY didn’t create separation in the first set until her second three point run, capped by an ace, pushing her lead to 18-14. PZY next scored twice but missed her serve to make it 19-16. That is when both players set down their racquets and left their court for the other side signaling an end to the first set.

That premature exit didn’t phase PZY in set two as she opened with a 3-2 advantage. But two were again gift points on MLY’s missed serves. MLY scored the first run of the second set with four points to go up 6-3. She stayed in front in the score despite stumbling and apparently injuring an ankle at 10-9. After stretching that injury out, she came up with a four stroke block to make it 12-9. PZY was unable to get a run generated in the entire second set. MLY closed off the final set with the last five points. She started that run with a two stroke smash, but the next four points all came on PZY errors, the last two on two strokes.
