FIRST SINGLES
Angel LIANG 2, Penelope ONSURD 0
(21-14, 21-16)
Angel Liang stopped Penelope Onsrud with a two set victory. The tenth ranked singles player utilized a strong side out game plus had a large advantage in the fast points (two strokes or less) 21-10. Liang delivered more winners with drives making up eight of her 22 winners. Onsrud had issues with the serve receive game with Liang winning that battle 6-0—-with two aces and four gifts on missed serves.
Liang got her first point off a missed Onsrud serve. That helped get traction for the early lead including the first run to put her up 4-2. Another three point run with a deep ace followed immediately by a short ace made the score 9-5. After a three stroke smash gave Liang a 12-8 lead, Onsrud fought back with the drop game. She scored the next four points, with three coming on drops and that tied both players at a dozen. A five stroke bird that sailed deep gave the advantage back to Liang and she responded with six more points to stretch the lead to 19-12. Both players traded side outs to finish the set.
The second set had some similarities to the first set. Neither player was able to generate a sustainable run. Onsrud did hold a 5-4 lead after two hitting errors off clear shots. A missed serve halted that momentum. Liang pulled in front at 13-10. Onsrud closed the gap to 14-13. Liang was able to break through with a three point run (17-13) which Onsrud immediately answered with her own three point run (17-16). After a four stroke smash, Liang never gave the bird back.
