Badminton Out & About: Highland Park v Central 4.26.2019

HIGHLAND PARK 4, CENTRAL 3

Friday matches are not popular, but today I was able to get out & about. Highland Park swept the season series with Central with a 4-3 win at home on Friday afternoon. The Scots won each singles match, the Minutemen took all the doubles. There was only one match that went the distance and that came at third doubles. The Central pair of Julia and Emma bounced back from a second set loss to preserve the Central doubles domination. The only set that was tight came at second singles with Elisa taking the second set in extra points over Mai Lee.

FIRST SINGLES

NEUL 2, ANNIKA 0 (21-16, 21-16)

The first time these two teams played Neul was at second singles, so this was the first confrontation between the two players. The freshman won this match today thanks to limiting Annika to only one run for the day. Neul didn’t have an abundance of runs but had two more than her opponent. The Scot “smashed” her way to victory with 15 for the day. That total was one less than Annika’s total winners of 16. That made up for her service game that had seven errors.

Neul grabbed the first run early in the first set with four straight points to lead 4-1. That run ended on a missed serve. On Neul’s third service she rattled off five more (11-4). Annika had her only string sequence of the day on her fifth service adding four to her totals to trail 13-9. Neul had five straight side outs after that with the smash accounting for three of that total. Annika was also in side out mode with four straight.

The second set saw a 5-4 advantage for Neul early, but three of the points for Annika came via missed Neul serves. The HP freshman never trailed, but Annika did tie it up at 11 with a block on a third stroke. At this point there were no runs. That quickly changed when Neul rang up five points starting with a six stroke smash. It was the only run of the set. That five point cushion remained in place the rest of the match.
