FIRST SINGLES

Bebe SAY 2, angel LIANG 0 (21-16, 21-12)

#3 BeBe Say of Washington swept #5 Angle Liang of Edina with an average margin of seven points. Say more than doubled the winner totals of Liang with more points on the soft drives (11) than Liang had total (10). Say was able to convert on her serve more often and prevented her younger opponent from generating any traction with runs.

Oddly enough Liang was the first with a run (leading 4-2 in the first set) but was only able to get one more and that came in set two. Say answered Liang’s first run right away with three points of her own followed by another three on her fourth service of the first set (8-5). Liang had her last lead in the first set at 12-11. A missed short serve that went wide ended that sequence. Say broke a 13 tie with her third run of the first set (16-13). Liang clawed her way back into the match trailing 17-16 after a pair of Say hitting errors. The host finished the first set with the last four points capped by a three stroke drive on point 21.

After a missed serve to start the second set, Say ran off five straight, the highlight coming on the fourth point which lasted 11 strokes and ended on a soft drive. Say tallied nine soft drives in this set, six coming on the third stroke after a deep serve followed by a clear. The set was still competitive at 14-11, but Say ripped six straight points (three on the soft drives just described). After a side out Say finished with a soft drive again, but  on the second stroke.
