2017 MINNESOTA ALL STAR MATCH
The annual Minnesota high school All Star match went to the White team in a sweep over the Reds 11-17-19. The Whites blitzed through the match and led at all key breaks. Balance, execution and consistency marked their performance. The Whites racked up a dozen runs during the course of the night, while the Reds struggled to string points together. The Reds didn’t get their first run until the second set and then they trailed 21-8. Toward the end of each of the second and third sets, the Whites came to life. They had a run of 8-2 in set two and strung together seven straight forcing the only White time out of the night at 23-19 in the final frame. But in reality it was more of a death bed conversion. White led 23-12 prior to that run leaving little doubt to the final outcome.
In set one White broke free from a four all tie with their first run for four. Another four point run gave the Whites a 13-6 advantage and forced the first time out of the night. That was a momentary reprieve as White tacked on five more after a side out to lead 18-7 and forcing the final Red time out. Kate Berg and Anna Blaschko led the way with three kills each in set one for White.
Set two quickly shifted to White with a five point run (8-2). Eerily the points racked up with time outs at 11-4 and 18-7. In this set Madeline Torve and Berg racked up four kills.
The final frame saw the Reds hold their latest lead at 4-3, but with Payton Nutter at the service line, that quickly changed in favor of the Whites. She served up seven straight after a side out including three straight aces. A five point run doubled the score at 22-11 late with Erin Fallert capping that run with a pair of aces. Abby Benson served up the longest run of the night for the Reds with six straight.
Looking at the rosters there were some advantages inherent in the White roster. Most of the AAA players are already off to their college homes so only three were left. Two played for White. Most D1 players are gone, only three are left. All three were with White. And players with a metro background tilted to White 5-3. Also State championship appearances pointed to White 4-3
