MEDFORD 64, LAKE CRYSTAL-WELLCOME MEMORIAL 55

#12AA Medford topped Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in a 2AA non-conference match up on Monday night. The Tigers held a two point lead (27-25) at the break. There were twelve lead changes in the beginning of the second half with host Medford getting the last switch at the 7:15 mark on a field goal by Izzy Reuvers (52-51). At one stretch both teams scored on eight of nine possessions. The Tigers held the Knights scoreless the last 2:39 of the game—-a total of five possessions. Medford finished the contest with six free throws in their last three possessions.

Emma Kniefel, last year’s Gopher Conference Player of the Year, led all scorers with 19 points, 13 of which came in the second half.

LCWM had four players in double figures, but their leading scorer Lakesha Carter exited the game with a lower limb injury after being fouled at the 6:26 mark of the first half. LCWM was clinging to a 17-15 lead at the time. She did return in the second half, but Medford seized advantage of her absence the remainder of the first half with a 12-8 run.

Both these teams are tweeners, and by that I mean they play in conferences that are split between AA and A teams (Gopher & Valley Conferences respectively). Both teams will have a hard road in March with teams in the Minnesota River or Big South (East side). Those conferences are solid AA and their schedules are rough and tumble as they prep for the March to March.

My first option today was to head to St. Francis, but with my charting of Anoka on Saturday I eliminated that option.
