CAMBRIDGE-ISANTI 48, BRAINERD 41
Two different scoring philosophies were on display in Cambridge Thursday night as the host Bluejackets defeated Brainerd in a battle between sections 7 and 8 in AAAA. CI looked for post ups or scored in transitions off turnovers. CI was 6/6 in transition lay ups, while Brainerd failed to score in their only attempt. CI was 18/26 inside; Brainerd was only 3/8. Perhaps it was the zone defense as a cause for the lack of interior game. Brainerd relied heavily on the 3 point shot. Examining the shot percentages inside CI racked up an impressive 66.7 percent to the 29.4 for the Warriors. That offset the miniscule 9 percent behind the arc for CI compared to the more robust 36.4 for Brainerd. Both teams were sluggish in the first half with the hosts holding a 17-15 lead thanks to a put back by Jana Swanson. The 6-0 Bemidji State recruit had 16 points on 8/11 shooting. Brainerd only made five 2 point field goals all night.
After Brainerd cut the deficit to 27-26 on a 3 by Autumn Miles, CI scored the next 10 points holding the road Warriors scoreless for eight possessions and four and a half minutes. With 25.8 seconds left Brainerd got the margin to 44-40 after a 3 by Myah Nelson, the eighth and final 3 of the night for Brainerd. CI responded on their last two possessions with four free throws by Jackie Olander.
CI is now 2-1 ; Brainerd is 1-2.
