GBB Out & About: Red Wing vs. Rochester Mayo

RED WING 71, ROCHESTER MAYO 58

On Tuesday, Mayo upset then #4AAA Austin 68-61 in Packerland. The Spartans traveled to Red Wing to face the current #4AAA Wingers on Thursday night hoping for the same results. The results this time favored the hosts 71-58. Perhaps some of the aftereffects of the big win Tuesday echoed early in the Thursday match up for Mayo. RW, perhaps attacked Mayo with newfound respect and raced off to a commanding 26-9 lead after eight minutes of play. By that time the Wingers were soaring at an unsustainable 200 pp100 on 13 possessions. RW had three 3s and one old fashioned three in the sequence. Abi Deming, who led all scorers with 20 points, provided nine of the first eleven points for RW, all on inside action as the Mayo defense let her slip through the cracks. The last ten minutes of the half belonged to Mayo as they put a half court trap that slowed RW down and took them off their rhythm.  The Spartan surge did not begin until they trailed 32-12 with six minutes left in the half. It was Mayo’s turn to sizzle. They scored on six straight possessions with 13 unanswered points. By the end of the half RW’s mountain of a lead had dwindled to the size of a molehill 34-31.

Just as the first half saw RW get the jump, so did the second half as they scored four straight times. Mayo did not slouch at the beginning but did not keep pace with RW going 9-6 to start. That separation maintained the rest of the way. Mayo’s cause was hampered by a seven possession drought. Down the stretch RW met each Mayo challenge and scored six straight chances frustrating the comeback chances. RW in the end scored their last 12 points at the line. All this In the last 3:41 of the game.

Four Wingers reached double digit scoring.

It has been a good start for new coach Peter Johnson. Red Wing remains unbeaten with their sixth win of the year, and fourth Big Nine victory. Mayo is now 1-3 on the year, two of those losses have been by one point.

At this point I have seen 48% of the AAAA teams, and 30.6 of the AAA teams.

Thankfully today there were no technical issues or user issues with the software. That is why the report is up now.
