GBB Out & About: Belle Plaine v Glencoe-Silver Lake

BELLE PLAINE 64, GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE 50

A quick start coupled with foul issues helped Belle Plaine to an early lead. Sharpshooting held off one challenge from host Glencoe-Silver Lake. The last five minutes during the home stretch BP held off one more gasp from GSL including six straight defensive stops from Lizzy Schmidt who also scored eight of the final dozen Tiger points. The end result was the tenth victory of the year for BP in a road win over a 2AA North rival.

BP scored the first eight points of the game with junior 1000 point scorers Lauren Johnson and Sarah Lenz knocking down consecutive 3s. Johnson added a left handed lay up for the 8-0 margin. The Panthers decided at that point to regroup with a time out. Only 1:40 of action transpired. GSL was further hampered by guard Miah Monahan’s foul troubles. She accumulated three before four minutes expired. As was evident on Saturday, smaller class players that are instrumental in ball handling and scoring, remain in the contest. The BP lead expanded to 26-11 with 3:30 left in the half. The home town team outscored the visitors 10-5 to end the half. GSL trailed 31-21.

GSL cut the deficit to eight early in the second half. The BP aerial attack heated up again. The Tigers knocked down three 3s in five possessions to push their margin back up to 41-27 and again GSL needed to talk about the situation with 12:53 left in the game. BP stretched the deficit to 16 before another GSL surge (19-9) made it a two possession contest (52-46). Four straight scores has a way of enlivening the home crowd faithful. Six minutes remained in the game. A put back by Lenz halted the GSL momentum. The Panthers were saddled with two straight travel calls further throwing sand in the comeback gears. Then Lizzy Schmidt took over. She scored seven straight BP points, holding off the GSL threat and providing a secure cushion at 61-46 with 1:38 left.

Fouls were a big part of this game with GSL having three players at four fouls, BP had one foul out and two more with four. This helps explain the 50 free throw attempts. BP missed opportunities to pad their lead with missed front ends of one & ones.

BP delivered eight 3s on the night to three for GSL. BP as a team attempted more 3s than 2s.

This game was the second contest in a rare Monday boy/girl doubleheader.

BP is now 10-1 on the year. GSL 4-6.
