Club GBB Out & About: North Tartan Six Pack

North Tartan roared back onto the MN State AAU championship podium with a record setting six state titles on Sunday. NT won at 11, 10, 9, 7, 5, and 4 grade levels. The program previously had the most title record with five (1998, 2011, and 2013). This ended a two year dry spell where the Nike based program won only one title (4th grade, 2020).

MN Stars Borowicz in eighth grade successfully defended their title for the third straight year. It took an overtime 3 at the buzzer by Kendall McGee (Breck) (I apologize. I had the wrong name earlier)  to secure the spot for the third seed team. 43Hoops Johnson also won their third straight title. North Tartan, in the fifth grade division, has now won two at that age level.

NT picked up three second place awards as well. The 6 and 8 grade divisions, but also an affiliate in 7th grade which was an all NT final. The main foil today for NT was MN Fury. NT kept the Fury off the top of the podium with three wins in the oldest three divisions with remarkably similar scores and margins, 12 in 11th grade, 11 in 10th grade and 14 in 9th grade.

The highest scoring teams today were NT 16U and MN Stars Borowicz with 55. The tightest game of the day came at the 8 AM session with NT 4th grade outlasting Crossfire South 38-36.

So was seeding accurate or not? Five of the eight divisions repeated from two weeks ago. The changes came at 8, 7, and 5. Did the 58% rule hold? Welllllll…..yes and no. The championship return rate was 5/8 or 62.5%. The original 57% rule was when there were only 7 divisions (the fourth grade is only five years into their records). That meant a 4/7 ratio in the old days. Excluding 4th grade it comes out to 4/7—bingo. What about for the same two opponents? Only three of the games today were repeats with 9 and 4 holding to form and 5 flipping the result between seeds 1 and 2. The overall field featured 11 of the same 16 teams from two weeks ago—a rate of .688. Again excluding 4th grade it becomes 9/14—a rate of .643. The lowest seed on championship court? Fifth seed Inspired Athletics -NT 13u in 7th grade. They upset #1 seed MN Stars Hill in the semis. Three #3s made it to championship court with MN Stars Borowicz the only one to win the title.

Not making it to championship court—–the sixth grade title game. For some reason the third place game was on championship court. The first place game in a back gym.

Tomorrow I will have more details on the seven games that were on championship court. Sorry no sixth grade title game.
