Badminton State Out & About: Johnson’s Yang & Phyo Champions

Johnson’s doubles number one, and number one seed overall in the tournament ended up completing the triple crown for Johnson. For the third time the Governors have won team, singles, and doubles titles in the same year. The first two times came in 2013 and 2018. Harding is the only other triple crown winner, and that came in 2006. The doubles title was the third and final piece in the triple crown. This marks the sixth Johnson doubles championship.

Stacy Yang and Phoo Phyo defeated the newly created doubles Harding pair of Allisia Lemmons and Hay Blu Day in three sets for the title. Lemmons and Day were first and second singles for the regular season, and during the team portion of the state.

Singles (in the story that follows) mainly stayed on script with top seeds advancing. Not so in doubles. Besides the Harding pair (#6 seed) the Burnsville second doubles pulled off several upsets all the way to third place. Corrina Benson and Abby Briese also got their monies worth with four of their five matches going three sets. Right out of the gate they were the longest match out there in the first flight with the Highland Park 1 pair. That was an upset, but then came #4 Washington 2, and #5 Central 1. They beat the Eagles 21-19 in the third, and, in their only two set win of the day, beat the Minutemen 24-22. They also were able to take the second set off the victorious Johnson duo of Yang and Phyo. The broke another Washington pairs hearts in the third place game taking sets two and three 23-21, and 21-19.
