Badminton Out & About: Edina v North St. Paul

EDINA NORTH ST. PAUL

The Hornets buzzed the Polars 6-1 in the only match on Friday. The newest badminton program took first singles and competed strongly at second singles pushing to three sets, but the other slots in the lineup could not get to ten points in any of their sets. The total NSP points in doubles came to 21.

This is the second time this year I have charted North St. Paul.

A reminder: the first polls will be out on Sunday. It will include team, singles and doubles. If I have no results from any teams they will not be listed.

FIRST SINGLES

Sheng XIONG 2, Tenzin TSEPHEL 0
(23-21, 21-15)

The Polars Sheng Xiong prevented a shut out with a two set win over Tenzin Tsephel. In both sets Xiong pulled out to big early leads. Tsephel stormed back in the first set and had two opportunities to take the set, but Xiong regrouped and scored the final three points for that win. Xiong took the winners 25-14. She only allowed two winners in the second set. The preferred winner came on clears with nine.

Xiong took advantage of a six point run on her third service in the first set to lead 8-3. She also prevented any runs for Tsephel up to her 19-13 lead. Then Tsephel made her rally. It was also her first run. Seven points later the Hornet was on the verge of victory at 20-19. A six stroke block evened the score at 20. An error gave Tsephel her second chance, but a wide serve halted that dream. Xiong closed with a five stroke clear followed by an eight stroke error in the net.

The second set was a replay of the first set with Xiong notching the first run, this time a seven point surge on the way to an 8-3 lead. Included in that run were two straight aces. Tsephel did not wait until her back was to the wall to mount her comeback in this set. She had a pair of three point runs to close the gap to 14-12. Another big Xiong run of six put her on the brink at 20-12. Tsephel did get a final push of three but Xiong finished the match with an eight stroke clear.
