Badminton Out & About: Math & Science v Hmong College Prep Academy

MATH & SCIENCE 6, HMONG COLLEGE PREP ACADEMY 1

For the third straight time my charting involved Math & Science. Tuesday I went back to the Woodbury charter school to see Hmong College Prep Academy to knock another school off my to-do list. For those keeping track I have four schools left on the menu. And for the third straight time M&S came out of the match with a win. This was the first time an opponent was not shut out. HCPA did win the first singles match (see below) and at first doubles the match went three sets, the only one to do so today. The rest of the sets M&S proved to be too much. The Dragons had 11 double digit wins on the day, the Warriors had one.

FIRST SINGLES

PAZONG 2, Akua YEBOAH 0
(21-19, 21-10)

Pazong was the only Warrior on the day with a W. But it took a late rally in the first set to change the trajectory of the match. Akua Yeboah had a 17-12 lead before Pazong rallied for a 9-2 finish to claim the first set. With that momentum, Pazong kept rolling in the second to a double digit win. Pazong had big advantages in winners at 23-9 with smashes totaling 14, five more than Yeboah had in total winners. At one point in the second set Pazong scored four straight points on smashes. Yesterday in the win over Eagle Ridge Yeboah had 28 winners with eight smashes. Today she was shut out in the smash category.

Both players struggled to “earn” a point at the start of the first set. The first winner came on a Yeboah ace on her sixth point (6-2). Pazong also didn’t get a winner until her sixth point (a smash) to close the gap to 7-6. Yeboah enjoyed a five point margin at 15-10 and again at 17-12. Two consecutive missed serves by Yeboah on her seventh and eighth service took momentum away from her and opened the door for the Pazong comeback. Yeboah still led 19-17 but a six stroke smash returned the bird back to Pazong and she scored two straight aces to take the lead at 20-19. A seven stroke smash ended the first set.

Yeboah was unable to generate a run in the second set. Pazong’s first run came on her third service and gave her a momentary lead at 4-3. Yeboah did outlast Pazong on the next two points that went over ten strokes to retake the lead at 5-4. A run of four put Pazong in front to stay 8-5. The energy level dropped severely for Yeboah late in the second set. With the score 10-9 in favor of Pazong, Yeboah was only able to squeeze out one more point.
