Badminton Out & About: North v Edison

NORTH 5, EDISON 1*

Another day, some more history. North won their first match in the Lars Lindqvist era. The Polars upended host Edison 5-1. 5-1? Third doubles was vacant for both teams and that is why the score does not add up to seven and an asterisk was added. Some perspective on the Polar win: in the last two competitive seasons (2021 and 2019) North had five wins in singles and doubles. Today in one contest they matched that.

Today most of the matches lasted two sets. The exception was at second doubles which went the distance. Not only did it go the distance, it also was the tightest set of the day with Eliza & Mynia edging out Hala & Sara by two.

Edison has a few players that are recent immigrants from Afghanistan.

This completes my Minneapolis checklist. This game was supposed to take place last week but was moved to today. I am now left with just two teams left to chart.

FIRST SINGLES

Amelia 2, Asiah B 0
(21-6, 21-10)

Amelia prevented the Tommies from being shut out with a two set win over Asiah. Amelia had a healthy 76 percent of her points off serve thanks to the eight runs over the course of her ten services. Amelia was very stingy with her errors only making two that resulted in Asiah points. Winners tipped to Amelia 29-12. She had more winners on drops (14) than Asiah had total. She also had five aces, two consecutive in the second set that were of the short variety. In set one Amelia scored the first four points and rang up eleven points in a row on her fourth service (I had it over at 21-3). Asiah, at the start of the second set, was able to get a side out and led 1-0. Amelia’s third service provided an eight point run and an 11-3 lead. Asiah never had a run, but she was able to squeeze at least a point out of her next three serves. Amelia closed the match with five straight points including three consecutive drops each of five strokes.
